Been layed up in bed with pneumonia for the last week and got out to do some fishing yesterday. Didn't really feel like driving far so I just decided to fish in my pond for a while. I was using my new 8 foot berkley big game rod and Okuma reel. The rod wont fit into the rodholders I have so I just set it on the bank by my chair. I looked away for a bit and when I looked back my pole decided it wanted a drink of water and was heading there pretty fast. I dove out of my chair and caught it just as it was entering the water. I set the hook and thankfully I had set my drag. Took me about five minutes to get it in and ended up being a nice 12lb channel. By the way it fought I thought it would push at least 18. I have to say I love how my new rod and reel handle a good fight. It was the first fish for my new gear and I wasn't dissapointed. I got some pictures taken so hopefully I can get them posted as well as get a good avatar pic out of it.

    Benjamin,

    Nice catch! Way to go!

A good fishing pond is great. We have one but it's a hundred miles away. Back when my father in law was alive he keep it stocked and fed them every day. Sure was a fun place to fish and great eating channel cats.

Glad you got over that pneumonia, thats bad stuff.

Access to a good pond with channel cat is the way to go. My dad keeps his fed and stocked and it isn't unusual to catch them between 10 and 15 pounds.

It is my experience that channels in small ponds tend to more aggresive biters than other catfish of the same size. Keep catching em and dont let one get to keep your rod as a souvenir.

Yes and I always put em back in my pond to keep them fat and happy. No use eating those fish when I can go catch some good eaters somewhere else. Hopefully soon I can get a digitall camera and show you all my fish:smile2:

I have a couple of pictures on my computer finally but can't put them on here for some reason. I would like to change it to my profile pic and post them here. If someone could help me out it would be much appreciated.
