Im looking to buy a trolling motor for my 14' jon boat. A dealer is asking 126$ for a new one, hand controlled with 30lb thrust. he also wants 60$ for a battery. should i pay that much or look elsewhere?

I gave $100 for mine back around March this year at Wal-Mart, has a 34# thrust hand controlled Motorguide brand, weedless prop. If I were you I would shop around and find the best deal I could find before I would settle on one.

You can find those 30 pound MinnKotas cheaper then that but his price is in the neighborhood.
I see them usually around 100 bucks.
Last one I bought I paid 89 for.

WalMart has MinnKota or MotorGuide trolling motors in that 30lb thrust range for about $90-$100. They also have EverStart marine deep cycle batteries for about $50.

Thank you guys. after visiting this guys shop, i have realized that he might be thinking i dont know what im doing(he's partially right) and is trying to take advantage. he quoted me 450 dollars for a mariner 5.5 HP:eek:oooh:......used!
I'll probably go the wally world route and use just a trolling motor for now. next year, i'd like to upgrade to a 10 HP. right now, i have a 7.5 but it only runs when it wants to. i just put some snazzy red carpet in it and its looking nice! ill post up some pics when i get it in the water next time.

Yep, save money whenever you can, then you can afford fishing euip. for your little fishing partner pictured with you. I only have a trolling motor, lots of places that I have fished.

check craigslist.com , seen a couple small boat motors down here in nc go for pretty cheap on there, these are just people tryin to sell stuff they don't need anymore, but if u go used, i would see if it can be started before handing cash over, just to make sure it runs, but then u gotta shut it off right away so that it doesn't overheat.
