Would I be out of line to ask for Prayer for my old truck? I am at the end of my rope on this thing, I do not have the money to take to the Ford shop, Put a new rebuilt distributor in today got it firing but still would not start it just poped and backfires when the throttle was opened. Getting Fire and fuel noe but still no start! I think the truck is possed.

Do you have the right firing sequence? May have spark plug wires crossed.

Top,beg, borrow or steal a timing light ,and have him ste it to the manual,as for starting it,You may have to loosen the dist. and play with it to get the engine started, then adjust to a light. Also If the cam is not OE [rv cam etc ] the timing will be different than the manual states,I had this happen once when we traded a stock cam for an rv cam in a 302,we had to set timing for a 351W.

Sounds like maybe your timing chain or gear mighta slipped a notch or two provided the wires did not get crossed and I once changed a distributer out and had it exactly 180 degrees out. Just some things i'd check. But like I always say "It's Hard Tellin' Not Knowin' " Good luck man and hope you get 'er lined out.

If its popping through the throttle body its fireing on an open port. Your timing is off. If it pops throughthe exhaust it most time lies withen the ingnition system. I am going to guess without being there your dist is in wrong and its not fireing on the no 1 cylinder at the proper time. Ge hime to recheck the no 1 cylinder to see if it comes to top dead center and the distributor matches up to it.

I would make sure its not out 180 degrees. Not knowing much about this engine you are putting in. If its not out 180 I would rerun the valve settings make sure they are not to tight. Possible timing could be off but its pretty easy for anyone to line the marks up on that engine.
