aligator gar

    anyone ever go to catch a aligator gar that is a fish on my list that I want to catch sometime maybe a 200lbs + that would be awsome

    wish i had the money to head down to the trinity river.thats the only fish i'd like to catch other than a cat.

    i fish the trinity river every spring and summer in a few diff honey holes specifically for alligator gar and cats biggest one as of now is about 200lbs was too big for me and one of my fishin buddies to lift out of the water was about a 8fter

    shoot any time yall wanna go just let me know if you think catching big cats is fun try hookin into one of those monsters

    usually in the warmer months from about april-september depending on weather and water conditions havent been able to fish this winter yet river has been outta the banks but i will fish it soon and will give a report about how the gar are biting as well as the cats ect

    you should see the episode with Bill dance and Jonnie Morris fishin the trinity for gar. give you a good idea what to expect. you can find it on versus.com or the cable channel vs country.

    tackle consists of braid or mono line atleast 20lb test with usually an 80lb mono leader or a steel shark leader coupled with a large penn reel or a shakespear tidewater my favorite setup so far for these awesome fish is a penn powerstick mh action 6'6 with a penn 310gti spooled with 300yds of 30lb trilene big game and an 80lb ande leader 4oz flat bank sinker and a 10/0 king kahle hook or gama big river hook when i can afford them

    as far as bait goes whatever you can get your hands on works i personally prefer fresh shad threadfin and gizzard cut into approx 1/2in slivers also i have caught them on bluegill bullheads buffalo carp chubs minnows basically if it swims you can catch a big gator gar on it freshness is the key though old bait and they tend to shy away it seems like especially the older larger ones

    i'll put it this way to fish my fav spots for gator gar if you cant hand load your boat then you aint got a chance lol

    There is also a show with them in it,, "Monster fish" the guy is chacing them all over the trinity, good show, it has big fish from all over the world, if you havent seen it.. check it out,,
