I have had ALOT more skunked trips than I have had trips with fish caught. The first two tourneys I fished this year I ended up with a big fat 0! So I have been on both sides!

An old man told me when I first started out going after these fish, "put enough time on the water and you'll figure em out". I have made fishing a life style for me. I am addicted! I am on the water any chance I get and I am constantly trying new things if I am not immediately catching fish. I have made alot of effort to find new places to fish this year and it has really paid off.

I have found and caught alot of big fish, Team Death Barge has caught a 91 and an 84 this year and I'm pretty dang proud of that accomplishment. But it didn't come easy, I spend on average, at least 100 hours on the water every month. Hundreds of dollars in fuel, but that's what I love to do! When I look back and realize how far I have come since 2004 when I purchased my boat, I am very happy! Those first 2 years I went skunked virtually every trip. I just get out there and try anything, try anywhere and it has worked.

Another thing that I have done this year is watch the river levels and the water temps very closely. I personally believe that the water temp will effect WHAT the fish will eat. That is coming from my own personal observations and success rates using different bait fish. I know this just from spending hours and hours on the river.

I love fishing and anybody that knows me knows this. The thing I enjoy the most is when I launch the boat in the evening, starting the motor when the boat hits the water, the smell of the river, then running the river to the that first bait hole...to me that is one of the best parts of the trip. It's what I makes me keep coming back. That and the possibility of catching that new Missouri State Record or new World Record Blue Cat!

Have I mentioned that I love fishing???

For those that are interested....I'm at Melvin Price right now and the first 4 gates from the bank out towards the dam are closed. I've watched the boat out there fishing the current break reel in two fish already!

Actually Bob, your probably the "old man" he was talkin about.

Rat, nice post. Have you been talkin to Grump? The other night when we went out on the river, he was saying almost the exact same thing about you and how far you have come in a couple of short years. He mentioned how you were able to do that because of the time you spend on the water.

Maybe he was hinting to me about me needing to "earn" nice fish. LOL

Well said rat-man. I am surely not on the numbers you are but I have noticed as well that the more I fish these waters the better I get. I actually like the work that goes into finding a "new" spot. I think that is the appeal of the big rivers to me. With the vast amount of water, different structure and current types...plus the changing nature of the rivers (water levels, seasons...etc) there are SO MANY spots within striking distance of our home I think I could fish for 20 years and not find them all.

Lately I have been opting for better scenery and unproven (to me) fishing grounds vice the ULTRA-urban tried and true grounds of the 26/27 pool I know so well. I'm finding that I would rather have a [slower] but quiet peaceful night in the middle of nowhere than I would have a super active night near a busy bridge or tanker terminal.

Like Bob says...the flow of the river is a therapy all its own. Now if I can only get him to tell me where to set up on those half-crazy-bikini-clad-inflatable-mattress-floating-chicks I'll be set!

I don't have the hogs under my belt that the ratman has, but I can surely attest to his words.

The learning curve is more like a step function or staircase. At first, you suck, you suck real bad and you only catch a fish here or there. After a few hundred data points (many hours), you start catching fish almost every trip (this took two years for me). Then, after a few hundred more data points, you catch more fish every trip and there seem to be more lunkers.

With all that said, I think I'm on about the third step and ratman is getting towards the top of the staircase. I know natural talent limits me as well as my fishing partners, but a big difference is that 100 hours a month.

    I'm fairly envious.

Cage match!!! This will be the second show down for the legendary onecatfishbob in 2009.

    Time: TBD
    Location: CB
    Rules: First one out, wins
Gear: Bob gets nunchucks, Rat wears oversized boxing gloves

I'll bring the cage and will also take wagers.

Sportsbook.com has Bob a 4 to 1 favorite. The caption says, "The public loves Bob's wisdom and freakish agility in this epic showdown. Ratman seems to have lost a little something since his truck pickin'up days with his stamina and determination in question."
