    does the impeller have a key on the shaft.Thanks in advance.

    Well, it ought to, considering if there was no key for the impellor it wouldn't really spin, thus not really pump water through the water pump. There should be a key on the shaft for the impellor for all water-cooled outboards if I remember correctly.
    I did a water-pump change on a Mercury 4hp a little more than a year ago, so my memory is a little shady. You could most likely go to the local public library and find a service manual if you don't want to buy one to save some $$. Hope this helps.

    My 75hp merc had one on it so yours should too. They are pretty straight forward to change, on mine it was a pain getting the shift shaft to line up but other than that it was simple.

    I've never seen one that wasn't keyed to the shaft. Not all are keyed alike though.
