    How bad can it get?

Last week, ABX Air announced 7000 jobs in Wilmington will be gone in a year or less, and today, GM who employs 2,500 folks locally will shut down Moraine Assembly in 2010.

In 2002, I was working a production job at a factory in my hometown of Wilmington that I thought I'd retire from, when I found out all three of our plants in town were being sent overseas, to Brazil and China.

My last year there I made 30k, which was more than enough to provide for my three children and myself.
I've had a few jobs since then, but with no college degree, It's impossible to find something that pays enough to get by.

Now, by getting by, I mean, I lived in a small apartment, never go on vacation, have never owned a car less than 12 years old, we don't eat at restaurants, and don't go to the movies more than once or twice a year. My kids are only allowed to participate in one sport/extra cirricular activty per year. You get the picture?

I've not been working since January, and thank God I now live with my BF Jeff.

I've been to numerous job interviews and have been offered jobs but none of them, even adminstrative/clerical jobs start out at no more than 7 dollars per hour.
Okay, at 40 hours per week that's 280 bucks, before taxes...

Gas at 4 dollars a gallon is killing me! I drive a 1993 Explorer. Now, say what you will, but I have three kids, live way out in the country on a farm, and encounter massive snow, ice and mud each winter and spring, so a 4x4 SUV is a necessity.

The nearest town is 15 miles away, that would put my gas bill to drive ONLY to and from work at 40 dollars a week.
I pay the babysitter 100 dollars a week for my 9 year old, so that I am able to go to work.

So, my pay was 280.00 before taxes, and my expenses JUST TO BE ABLE TO GO TO WORK are 140.oo, half of my weeks pay.

I just don't understand how these companies can justify paying what they do and making HUGE profits, when half of my pay is going to be spent just so I can come to work!
The factory I worked for had been in town for 135 years. Last week, the areas largest employer, Airborne Express announced that it is closing here and seven thousand people will lose thier jobs. Today, General Motors announced that they are closing a local plant in 2010.
Where are we all going to work? How are we going to live? This is getting really scary.

I don't drive but maybe once or twice a week, I can't afford it. I no longer get that 6-pack in the evenings or even buy cigarettes, my bf rolls them!

Jeff hunts, and we have always have meat, in the summer we have 2 huge gardens that we love to eat out of, and still mangage to spend 200 bucks or more a week at the grocery.

I don't know if it's bad where ya'll live, but I don't know if we are going to make it here in SW Ohio unless something changes real soon.

It's bad everywhere Sis, until this country gets its head out of its arse it aint gonna get better. Illegals not paying taxes and deporting there earnings, politicians getting rich on oil, remember the Bush's are in the oil business, The trade ratio over seas, thats a joke. This country is self sufficient but the kennedys and such are getting rich the other way and laughing all the way to the bank. 4.00 a gallon and they wont release the emergency reserve of crude. If I dont reply tomorrow ya know the MAN took me out.

If we get rid of the illegals and the free trade agreements that will help matters somewhat, but IMHO its too late... We are a doomed society. I could be wrong but i forsee the US in utter chaos within the next 25 years or less..

No offense but they could release all of the crude but if its not refined it aint going to do any good.

I beg to differ with you. My wife drives a 99 De ville-- front wheel drive V8. It gets 26 on the highway, 22 average. We live 800 feet off the road and I have not plowed this northern Indiana driveway in 15 years. We have 2 sets of tires for the wifes car. In the summer it has Michelin's and in the winter it has Bridgestone Blizzacs snow tires. It will go all over in the winter and never get stuck. These people thinking they need a 4x4 because they live in the country are full of beans.

It is just people thinking they need something that they do not need. Drive those SUVs and get that 12 to 17, or get a car and put snow tires on it during the winter. My wifes car will push fresh snow as high as the hood and not get stuck.

And don't wine and say a Deville cost too much as they lose their value pretty quick after a few years. We got this one off Ebay out of Deerfield Beach, Fl. There are a lot of good clean used Cadillacs down in Fl and AZ. Those old farts don't hot rod them much, and there is no salt.

And a Deville is a full size family car, not no little one. They are a good comfortable family car that real adults [ 175-250 lb ] can get in and out of easy

These newer cars with front wheel drive are at their best in the snow and on ice too. If you put the right tires on them, they will go.

I do believe that the economy in your area is struggling. I know, because my whole lives just miles from you. But we can not blame everything on the government and illegals.

Factories are closing because we demand too much. Unions (once a great voice) have killed American production and will continue to do so because Americans want more for less year after year. Don't complain about needing money when you smoke or drink. Put you family first.

Illegals are doing jobs that none of you would perform any way so don't blame them. Yes they should be paying taxes and they should be held accountable for the medical expenses that they run up each year. But I say again, they are not taking your jobs (here in the states) because you wouldn't do that job anyway.

I feel we have to start doing more and complaining less. I speak the same voice as all of you............the difference is that I feel we have to help ourselves first! There is always a solution. I joined the military and I live quite comfortably. My family is very comfortable because of the work I do. This is not the answer to all problems, but there is an answer for those who go out and get it.

That's my two cents. Hope everyone has a good time fishing.

To my way of thinking, gasoline at $4.00 a gallon constitutes an inconvenience, not an emergency. That oil reserves should be held for an emergency, say, the need of our military forces. They are what keeps the bad guy away.

And, it sounds as though some of you guys are preaching your way of life, when, to me, the intent of this thread was to allow a person to blow off steam and release some pressure. Everyone is different, lets allow them that right.

Everyone can't afford a different car. And, on my part, even if I could, it wouldn't be a Cadillac. LOL

I'm not trying to start trouble, all I'm trying to do is give advice. You have to save money where you can. You are not going to bring jobs back, Not when big business will let people in China build stuff for a dollar an hour or less. Mexico is where most of the big three auto makers are putting plants. That's because they can have 3 dollar an hour people assemble your cars.

The statement I'm trying to convey is most folks don't need an SUV. Heck you can get a trailer hitch for any vehicle, car or truck or SUV so having one to pull a trailer won't wash here.

Trouble with folks in this country is they want what the Jones have. Well let the Jones have those payments. lol

It has not been that long ago that everyone with any sense, that lived up here put snow tires on their cars in the winter. Then came radial tires and folks forgot about snow tires. Now days with radial technology, and newer softer rubber compounds, Blizzacs are unreal. Ice and Snow === No Problem.

I don't care what kind of car she gets. But any front wheel drive with proper tires will preform very well on snow and ice. She said she had a bunch of kids, so she needs a family car/full size, not something like an Escort.

The way people are running away from big cars and SUVs with gas prices. My point on the De ville was, they give great mileage for a family car. The newer ones 04s and up will get 30 mpg on the highway. Big Fords and Lincolns will do that too, but I think they are rear wheel drive, so you don't get the weight advantage over the drive wheels, like a front wheel drive.

All I'm trying to say is she doesn't need an SUV and it's poor mileage..

there are no jobs around here that pay anyone enough to live off of. you have to know somebody who knows somebody etc... all the mexicans have the other jobs cause the corrupt head honchos dont wanna pay an american what they require. god, dont get me started on illegal mexicans. i just walked out on a job that was stocked full of them and havent worked since. but i did find a solution. the navy.
as long as there is greed for money the common man and woman will find it harder and harder every year. but the big business executives will soon get whats coming to them in the end.
but after all this, what do you expect when you elect a president who was born with a silver spoon? he has no idea what its like to be a common. he never has and never will be.

Funny you mention the military, because that's how I learned to deal with being poor.

My dad retired after 20 years in the Airforce and a tour in the Army before that.

I grew up on Airforce bases all over the world.

There were four kids, and my dad was a TechSargent, we never had a phone, ususally didn't have a car or refridgerator, never a washer and dryer, and I remember my Mom trading garden vegetables with other women on base trying to make a meal for us kids.

I have provided much better for my kids as a single mother as my dad and mom could through his whole military career. I wasn't about to sign up for that lifestyle.

But thank you Shane, for your service to our country.

What I can't believe is that the State of Ohio gave DHL 400 million dollars in tax breaks to locate to Wilmington, and a stipulation of the relocation was that a by-pass was built for all the trucks that DHL (ABX Air) would have moving in and out of town.

The citizens of Clinton County fought the by-pass for years, and emminent domain finally took the farms that had been in thier families for generations. And for what? To pull up and move when it's profitable for the company?

This isn't about what kind of car I drive, or mexicans, unions, or what career choices we make, this is about profit, HUGE PROFITS, being the driving force behind weather we will have jobs and homes six months from now.

i am surprised that this isnt in h.i. yet.

i work for a company-that in my opinion- makes a decent profit at the end of the day. i dont think that the pay is reflected to most of the employees. however, i am in the fortunate position to be in between. not great-not bad. some days i feel like a jack-a$$ and some days i feel like a stump broke mule.

things are definitely gettin' tough. and they will only get worse, b4 they get better. i personally feel like a good majority of personal finance issues can be resolved by looking in the mirror, and making choices about ourselves. the problem is, most of us (including me on occasion) dont want to make the necessary sacrifices.

actually, Angie, illegal mexicans(and all other illegals), and unions, and the car you drive have a LOT to do with the economy...along with hundreds of other factors.

People holler and blame the unions. Well the unions don't want people working for 1 dollar an hour, like China or 3 dollar an hour Mexico.

You want someone to blame, Look in the Mirror. Blame all the states that have Right to Work Laws, and are anti Union. Blame the folks that cuss the unions, then enjoy the standard of living they brought.

Cuss at Big Business that is running this country. But don't cuss or blame someone that is here illegal and will work for less than minimum wage. Gosh give him or her free health care. Don't build a fence, jesh, that will look bad.

Hey and while were at it, lets let folks kill themselves with illegal drugs. We don't need no fence.

This started a long time ago, early 70s, when foreign steel tryed taking my job. And no one cared.

Gosh is it not great to have the right to work for 7 dollars an hour or less. It has to be the Unions fault. LOL LOL :smile2::smile2:

if a person is making 15.00 per hr , how much does it cost for him per hr?this is appx. cost per hr 15.00 wage, the employer pays, your s.s,med.care,workers comp.,your ins.,vac.,holidays,this adds to about 8 to 10.00 to the 15. so that means you could be makeing 23.00 to 25.00 per hr. i have been on both side's of this game, so if each and everyone of you were in buiness to make money and not lose money , and some have stock holders to answer to i have not heard anything on this ,all yall can say it big buiness , oil co., ins.co wet backs, come on folks lets look why were up to our a$$hole's in debt because we have wanted to much, IE: xmas time when i was comeing up was one and maybe two gift's, now our kids get high dollar gift's and now times are going to get hard now are our young folk's going to make it, most don't even know how to cook ,if it's not in a can there lost. i think the best thing to do is look at your life style and see what you can do to cut back. because until we stand up for our wright's it's going to be this way

I am surprised that this post is not receiving more attention so I just wanted to get it started again. I am holding strong that people need to stop blaming everyone except themselves and do something about their own situation!

    As U stated u r not alone.

The US Companies r in busness to make a proft...never had a poor person hire me fer a long term job yet. Alot of them have share holders that invest in them and they...just like us want to make some money/a profit.

The GMs that u speak of r shuting down due to what they mfg, trucks n SUVs from what I've heard and thats due to the price of fuel right now. Thank you Libs/our goverment for seeing that we now have high fuel cost. The BIG Oil Companies want to drill and refine here but the libs have kept that very hard to do!!!!!! The Big Oil Co here would rather refine and sell THEIR CRUDE rather then having to buy it off of someone else (more profit if the own the crude oil).

Also WE, the US Goverment has the 2nd HIGHEST TAX RATE IN THE WORLD....35%...2nd only to Japan.

:smile2: YESTERDAY The president stated that there would be 12 new refineries built by 2012 due to nationl security!!!! ---Only problem .... it was the president of Iran!!----

IF we want more US Jobs we need lower taxes and drill and refine here.

I will tell you who is to blame........me and you and the rest of the citizens of the US.

How many of you vote? How many of you vote for the same person who has done nothing? Who actually checks up on the person you are voting for?
Which of you only vote because your Dad was a Democrat or a Republican?

Here is the way I vote. I listen to both sides and the lesser of the two evils get my vote. Usually I end up voting for the new guy, because the last guy didnt do crap.

How many of you e-mail your congressman? Let him know you are ticked off about the gas prices? About loosing jobs? About the big companies taking their jobs over seas? About taxes?

I e-mail my monthly, I doubt it does a dang bit of good, but at least I have said my piece.

As citizens we need to vote, and I think we need to clean the slate with the Kennedy, the Bushes, the Clintons, what has our leadership done in the last 10 years? Got us into 2 wars, free trade agreements, and lower taxes for the rich and gave oil companies tax rebates to "Find alternate fuel sources", that is like putting a fox in charge of a chicken coop.

The people need to wake up, and look at who they are electing.

    Just my thoughts.
