I have a 70 Nissan 2000 model, last night while coming up the river, it felt like I hit something then I lost power. At 1st I thought I spun the prop, but I cant get any RPM's max 1200 give or take. WhenI got the boat loaded I quickly started the motor put it it in gear and it will rev like normal. Its almost like something is wrapped around the prop it will lug down & die. The prop spins smoothly when in neutral and acts normal in forward & reverse when turning by hand. It starts & Idles fine. Any ideas????

Without being there and checking it I am going to guess the lower unit is binding up. Drain the oil and see if it has water in it or metal bits. You can also take it off and use a big drill to turn the shaft and see if its binding.

If you've still got an owners manual, see if it tells about a sensor that limits rpm's during an overheat or oiling issue.

Thanks for the replies! I found a arm that connects part of the throttle system to the magneto that had come off & I guess its not increasing the timing as the throttle is being pulled forward. When the arm comes off the magneto stays in the idle position.
