50 hp merc outboard starting problem

    Hi people. Here's the deal. 1976 merc 500... 50 hp outboard motor.
    Will not start unless we flip the high idle lever much of the way forward.
    Once started, will run with lever pushed back to normal postition, but idles
    fast, and the engine sounds a little rough. I'm trying to figure out if is a
    carb or timing problem. Any input would very helpful. Thanks Steve:crazy:

    If you haven't messed with the timing, it's more than likely a carb problem.
