I have a 1969 Johnson 20hp and when it is in neutral it will rev like it's supposed to. But once it is put in gear, rpms will barely climb abouve idle. Even wilth the throttle wide open. Any ideas? Thanks

I'd betcha a used doughnut hole the prop has been spun. Put it in forward gear, key off (or plug unplugged) and see if you can easily turn your prop. Prop still seems to be good??? test the compression.

Done any work on it lately? There's a lever that the shift handle moves so you can't rev up when in neutral. when you're in forward or reverse it moves out of the way so the throttle can move farther. It goes from the shift lever all the way up under the flywheel. If things aren't aligned right, you can't rev up. If the shift rod isn't put together right it might act the same way. You coulda broke the flywheel key or have bad points or a bad wire or any number of things.
