A friend of mine caught a 2 inch flathead last night on a piece of corn carpfishing. Would a 2 inch flathead be a 2007 hatchling or a fish from last year's class? I am mesmorized because the spawn can't be over, do some flatheads ever spawn early?

if you catch them use them as bait. Madtoms are excellent bait for everything from cats to bass.

You might want to check your Regulations before using them as bait. I know there are some states that have laws against using mad toms as bait.

although rare, it could have been other type of small specied catfish. like what is called banjo catfish. they are in that size range and have a flat wide looking head similar to a flattie.

The spawn is only a couple weeks going here in Ohio. I don't think a flat can go from egg to 2 inches in 3 or 4 weeks, right? How fast can they grow?

It was def. a baby flathead. Last year quite a few tiny flatheads were caught on night crawlers.

I just read that a 90-day old flathead should be around 5-7 inches.

Interesting post considering i just got back from memphis where i caught the smallest flathead i've ever seen. it was definately a flathead. and it was only about 7 or 8 inches long, at the most. i didnt figure it was from this years hatch, but i wondered how fast do they grow?? if it was last years, should'nt it be bigger??? or did they spawn early in that part of the mississippi???
