Caught a 40 # (pics r in arizona rivers section) over the weekend with my new penn 310 gti reel spooled with 80 # gorillia braid/ugly tiger mh rod . I am very suprised at how easy it was to bring in the big boy. Although he fought with all his might he was no match.
One thing i did notice was that I was not hooking them very deep. Im currently using Mustad # 6 bronze hooks that come in a 50 pack at Sports Authority, (not sure on a model number) they seemed dull out the box so I would file them a little before casting out. Seems to me that the weakness in my tackle is quaility hooks. My next investment is going to be some good hooks. Khale hooks seems to be very popular & reasonably priced.

The weakest link between you and a fish will always be the thing you skimped on..

*Also, if you are not confident in what you are using, It won't work for you.

Big wide Octopus hooks are the best, (in my opinon) for live gills. I use 8/0 for hand size and larger gills.

Once again Bro, Great catch!!! :smile2: :smile2:

Nice Cat for sure!! As far as the hooks go, I use Gamakatsu..(I think thats how you spell it,) 6/0 or 8/0 circle hooks. Kahle's are also pretty good. But I have had better luck with the circle hooks. Once you learn how to fish with them they pretty much hook themselves.

Nice fish, I like the Kahle hooks the best. It seems that most people here are all about kahle or circle hooks. The kahle just seem to work best for me.
