hi there,

got some problems with my toy.

it is backfiring thur the intake when cold, missing at all rpms and wont hold an idle.

what I have done: new pugs, cap, rotor, wires, checked for vacum leaks, set timing to specs.

am going to do: check/adjust valves, do compression check.

anybody got and idea what else i might look at??

also, the cpu is not showing any codes.

is it possible that a clogged Cat would cause this??

thanks

Sounds like you got some spark plug wires crossed...but i'm no mechanic. Its easy enough to do, and will cause it to run VERY rough.
A clogged cat will definately make it run like crap.If the laws arent real strict Id remove it completely, as its probably pretty expensive.
We need a little more infomation. what was it running like before the tuneup ? Was the timeing off?have you changed the fuel fliter?
You say you set timing was it off .Those timing chains guides are junk and break and the chain can stretch and jump timing or break/wear, check the timing again and see if its still right .
you could also hhave misaligned your distributor while you were changing all of it out and make it run rough. sounds to me like your spark plug wires are crossed though. also if you set your timing to specs you may have to adjust your distributor again. you may have to either advance or retard the timing to get it to run right.
timing was off a bit at first. have checked it several times since and it shows ok, when i check the valves i will check the chain. dont belive the wires are crossed but will check.

prior to the tune up it had started to run bad, after the tune up, just got worse..
It really sounds like you have a crossed wire somewhere, I don't think it would be in your timing, it may also be one of your plugs has a crack in it or recheck your gap on the plugs or make sure the plug wires are all the way one the plugs and cap.
Hope it is just minor.

:wink::big_smile:
Usually when a cat gets plugged, the engine runs good pretty good until you put a load on it (trying to accelerate). I'm not saying that it couldn't be your problem, but the last couple i've encountered run good until you put a load on them. I am especially doubtful now that you say it got worse after the tune up.
It makes a difference on the brand of plugs you are using also, Toys only like NGK or Bosch plugs. NGK is the better plugs.
Keep us posted on what you are finding..
as it ran worse after you worked on it , start with the wires , make sure the fireing order is right, new wires or the old? you can brake a wire pulling it off.did you happen to drop a plug, that can close the gap.also a plug can be broken installing it .good luck
I have had brand new plugs before not fire even though they are new and bad new plugwires.
Reread your first post. Maybe choke ? Fuel filter ?
how many miles on the engine? you didn't say. sounds to me like timing. i had a 86 22R and tghe timing belt jumped a notch. that's enough to do what you are describing.
gary
The 22re is a interference motor if the timing chain jumps it bends valves been there done that . I have a Toyota 22re . It is best to replace the guides and adjuster before that happens .
miles on the motor..... dont really know, it is bout 9 years old, was new when I got the truck,

cable to the speedo broke, I never fixed it. guessing bout 75k or so.

did this am, ajusted the valves, one of the intakes was a bit tight.
checked all ignition peices, used the factory book and went thur the coil/ignitor/ distributor, all checks ok within specs.

went to recheck timing after doing the above found that the cpu is now showing the airflow meter as a problem. have checked the resistance per the book. it shows ok. have run out of time this evening to do the other test on the meter.

other than the cpu code, this thing feels like a vacum leak, but I cant find it to save my life, maybe the airflow meter is giving bad info to the cpu and messing up the works...

plan to change out the fuel filter in the next day or so....who ever put the thing up under the intake should be hung...... only way to get to it is to remove the tire and go at it that way, most of the time i have to get one of my kids to reach in to help....

thanks to all that have added their imput, it has helped.:smile2:

also,

plugs are ngk, new, gap is set to the specs went back thur made sure all the wires to the plugs were in the right order.
Curious...What did the compression test show...You stated in a previous post it started running bad...was this out of the blue? Do you use it to haul a trailer? Interested in the compression test...These motors are pretty easy to work on...If you think it is a vacuum leak...Pick up a can of ether and spray a little around your intake and vacuum lines if the motor revs up you are in the right location...also with the motor running pull one plug wire at a time and you should see a significant change in the motors idle if one of them don't change the ideal you should check that wire, plug, and compression on that cylinder...Sometimes with those little 22R motors changing out the coil can help...For some reason when you do the test they hold the suggested specs. but under a load they fail...Just make sure if you change it you stay in the range for that motor or you will burn a piston out...
If you have never changed the Timing chain and guides you should take the time to do it now while you are into it this far anyway...This should be done every 65,000 miles...They are not that expensive to purchase just time consuming but you will have to do a little work and take your time follow the book if you have never done one before as they can be a little tricky...

Good luck and Please do keep us posted...

when you check the firing order be sure you are going in the right direction on the distributor cap!!! its an honest mistake that i have seen many times.... what is the firing order on that motor?
I have a 92 Toyota. 22re I have found that taking the starter off is the easiest way fore me to change the fuel filter. Just two bolts and let it down out of the way. Then you can easily get to the fuel filter.
