Hello I’m new here so thanks in advance for any advice. I have a Johnson 140 that will not trim down when the button is pressed with no sign of the motor working or getting power. However with the motor all the way up if the up arrow is pressed you hear the motor engage. This happened after a day on the lake where it worked fine until it was loading time.
You should probably check the connections. Could be a poor connection either at the motor if there are connections there or at the controls. That is about all I can think of. You may have to open the control housing. Not sure what you are comfortable with so a boat mechanic may be needed.
Today I bypassed switch using wire to “jump” the trim motor and it would trim up and down. So I took the trim switch apart tried the same thing. It would trim up but not down. Makes me think it may be a wiring issue
I am not a boat mechanic but if it were mine I would get a volt meter, a test light would likely work but the meter will give a lot more information. I would first check to see if I were getting power to the trim motor when the trim switch is pushed and if you are getting a good 12V every time it's pushed you know the issue is the motor or pump. I would also make sure there is not a limiter switch that is getting pushed and sticking. If you are not getting 12V to the motor see if you are getting it to the non hot side of the switch when it's pushed, if not likely a bad switch. Good Luck
Larry posted while I was typing, sorry for the duplication.
Another question is are you speaking of the switch on the shifter at the console or the switch on the outboard itself or both? I have seen people have the switch at the shifter go out but the outboard switch still worked which would definitely get you alot closer to diagnosing the problem
More than likely a rekey. There are two of them swap them and see if it works in other direction. Make sure if is a rekey but one from an authorized parts place don’t buy the cheep ones on eBay been there done that they will not last
