1974 650 merc-65 hp timing problem

    I need some help setting the timing on my 1974 merc 650 65 hp 3 cyl. outboard. can someone help me Ron

    What makes you believe it needs timing?

    when i give it full throttle it just cuts out but if I rotate the distributer it runs fine. ron

    There should be an arm that hookes to the timing advance so when you accerlate it it advances the timing. You need to take some type of cleaning spray fluid and clean up the advance system. Then oil each point. Some of those mercsw even had grease serks on the dist to do this with. If the engine has sat for awhile then you need to grease it to clean all the old dried lub out. As for timing it time off the flywheel with a woodruff key.
