I have a 1973 Mercury 50 Hp. It has 500 on the back of the cowl. I need to change the oil. Should I take it to someone or can I do it myself? I am very mechanically inclined, but have never done this before. If it is something I can do myself, any help on how would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi, Steve
It is simple just take out the two screws on bottom of lower unit one should say fill and one should say drain and let it drain good.
Then fill from bottom till fluid come out top hole then replace screw in top wile continuing to hold bottle in bottom then replace bottom screw.

You can get lower unit fluid at walmart in sporting goods.

Be sure to replace the gaskets behind the fill and drain screws. You can pick them up at any marine shop for about 80 cents a piece.
