Hey guys I figured I would just start a white river thread for my trips since thats where I mainly fish. That way its all together and I can look how I have been doing this year and compare my notes. I'm going to try and start putting down more info on conditions. Anyone can add anything they want, the more info the better. I've already gone a few times this year but Saturday night was my first night trip. No flatheads yet.
Looks like you are correct Jon. My motor is a 1979, definitely some differences. That does appear to be the thermostat housing area on the bottom of the water jacket, but I'd recommend looking at a manual with a schematic to make sure.
Welp got it out and tested the thermostat, it works. Opened up in boiling water and closed once it cooled.
This thing does look alil rough. You guys think i should just replace it anyways since its already out? The gasket ripped alittle (bottom left) so i probably need to replace that.
Im not gonna lie I struggled to get a few of the bolts out. Im not sure how Im going to put everything back together! If I cant figure it out I might need help guys!
After looking at it more I believe the gasket is shot, its warped and wore out compared to a new one Im looking at online.
Im still trying to figure out how to take it off. Even though the thermostat works I'm thinking I should just buy a new one anyways since I'm into it already.
If the thermostat is opening and closing then it is most likely getting the job done. But if a new thermostat is not too expensive I would probably replace it. Of course get all new gaskets and seals where needed. And what ever sealant is needed for them.
Be very careful when cleaning the old gasket off. The surface where the gasket sets needs to be clean and smooth so it will seal. Do like the video shows but do it carefully.
That wire with the connector in the bottom picture can be unplugged (it just pulls apart) so you can move the water jacket cover around a little easier to get things done. The only part of the cover that needs to be cleaned is the sealing surface. Don't waste your time cleaning the inner water jacket area. Of you see any openings where water is supposed to flow on the motor, try to make sure they are free of obstructions. And try not to let any debris you get loose fall down in.
Do like in the video and clean the threads (both inner and outer) as good as you can. Hopefully Dustin will have a thread tool to (carefully) use to get the inner threads clean.
Get with dustin on re-torquing the bolts and find out what the proper order for that is.
Parts ordered, should be here 3-5 days. Untill then all I can do is clean the old gasket off.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
