Hey guys! Figured I start a new thread to officially get the gears turning on the Indiana Gathering for 2020.

What do you guys think about something like this? I found a very nice rental cabin in Magnet that comfortably sleeps 20 people. They have a concrete boat launch with a dock within a couple minute drive.
If we got it for 2 nights and there were 14 of us (just as an example) the cost per person would be $29 per night.
Check it out, the place is super fancy. https://www.coluccirivercabins.com/cabins/lodge-at-buzzards-roost/
The owners sound pretty cool based on some reviews I have read. They also have other cabins close by, with some right on the water.
After searching for campgrounds in the Cannelton Pool, there hasn't been anything that fits what would work for our group. At least I haven't found one yet.

So what do you guys think?

Eric,
The Mrs. and I have checked out those Colucci houses (cant' really call them cabins) in the past and have been to Magnet a couple of times to see them.
They are very nice but (we feel) too expensive for a couple as they probably figure a group or large family will stay there. I feel they are also too expensive for a place that does not have a dock or even decent shore access. The ones that are "right on the water" are, technically on the water but the river is 150 feet or more down a very steep incline to a riprap shoreline that would beat a moored boat to hell. That said, it's been a while since we were there so they may have put docks in but it's still a climb up and down.
We did check out (just looking from the outside) the lodge on Dexter Road and it's quite a place. With a large group, the $29 per night isn't too bad but 14 people would equate to 7 boats and I'm not sure there is room there for 7 trucks/trailers.
When I told the wife about your idea, ever the practical one, her first comment was, "How are 14 guys all going to make breakfast at the same time in one kitchen and who would clean up the mess?!!!"

You are right , it is quite a dilemma trying to find somewhere in the right area with the things we need; I appreciate your efforts. Let's keep looking.

OK fellas, time to bump this thread and restart the discussion about the 2020 Indiana Gathering. I've gotta say that it's great to see new members in the area and I hope we can get a good sized group this year.

Here's a few things we have discussed:
Markland and McAlpine Pools are not our first choices.
A Late September or Early October gathering would be better in hopes of having some current in the river.
New Amsterdam is an option, but not ideal in the bathroom dept.

I've scoured the Cannelton Pool for spots with no good options as of yet. Maybe a look upstream from Brandenburg?

I haven't looked in the Newburgh Pool or the Myers Pool.

If you could lend a hand in digging up places to host the gathering that would be a huge help in getting the party started!!

Eric-

Charlestown State Park(upstream and between Louisville and Madison) has camping and all the facilities a State Park would have. Plus, there is an area marked for bank fishing and a creek that runs through. They also have a boat ramp, showers, etc.

Mailing Address:
P.O. Box 38
Charlestown, IN 47111

Mapping Address:
12500 Indiana 62
Charlestown, IN 47111

Fee schedule:

I think this would be nice but I'm not opposed to roughing it. I worry about logistics and parking the boats and being around many more people. New Amsterdam was cool as we were the only ones in the entire place.

Let's keep the ideas coming and try to find that good balance of privacy vs. amenities.

:wink1: Sounds like a good plan, Jay. Although I did enjoy most of the meals provided by the USMC in Vietnam there was one item I did miss the most. We were still getting the canned sea rats packed in the mid 40s. Anyway, that (4) pack of cigarettes was what I missed the most. I preferred the Camels or Lucky Strikes.

I did some electrical work. Mostly wiring up command bunkers. Anyway the Col.s hooch had a hot water heater in it. It blew a fuse one day and I went to fix it. Although I found it was only a fuse, I told them it was a burnt out heating element. So, we had no trouble getting the Col. a new one. I installed it and took the old one. Ours was the first and only enlisted hooch with hot and cold running water. Two 5 gallon fuel cans each with a water faucet and one with a newly obtained heating element. Man that was livin.:cool1:

“The Army way” you two aren’t still using the one square of toilet paper method are you? Haha
As far as Charlestown St park we have camped there and it’s certainly a nice camping park. For folks thinking of bank fishing the 14 mile creek - it’s a healthy hill to walk back up haha
Not sure I noticed easy access to bank fish the big river. I can’t say I was looking for bank sites so they may be there somewhere. The guys I saw were fishing the ramp.
The parking and ramp at the river is really nice and large & can handle our group but I’m pretty sure most everyone would prefer a different stretch of river...
I’ll go wherever though makes no difference to me so long as there’s water I bet we can find a fish!

Yes sir. Even that little piece you tear out of the folded corner to clean under the fingernail. That will sure break folks of biting their nails. :roflmao:

Haha, sounds like Catfish Dave

Thanks for all of your input guys!
I looked at Charlestown park campground and it is a well equipped place to stay. The drive from the campground to the ramp is 2 miles. Pulling our boats up on the shore while running up to our camp sites would not be very practical. If we were to accept this detail, then I would mention a possible other option might be the O'Bannon woods state park. Tom, Reese and I have stayed there in the past. It's well equipped with showers and hot water. It's about 8 miles from the boat launch in Leavenworth. I would think that the campground would not be crowded at the time we are going to be using it. Just wanted to throw that idea out as another option.
As I have been searching for a place, I have realized that the New Amsterdam campground is not listed on any search. That makes me think (I know that can be dangerous, lol!) How many other small campgrounds exist that are also not listed on search engines? I've been spending LOTS of time scanning the banks of the Ohio river on Google earth to see if there are any of these small camping spots. Then it dawned on me that if there are other small campgrounds, they most likely have very primitive infrastructures. And if that's the case, we should consider staying at New Amsterdam. At least we know we are welcome there, they have electrical hookups, and if we did want to rent a port a potty the management would most likely not have a problem with that.
Perhaps a reasonable fact to determine is how much one of those would cost to rent for the weekend?

You are correct of course. It is hard to really know who will be able to make the Gathering until they actually show up. But life Happens and some will want to be there but not make it.

It really amazes me that the campground doesn't have a decent bathroom. I would think they would get much more business.

Now I never did check on Brandenburg park at their ramp. I have launched there many times and on the back side of the concession building are 6 of so restrooms that have always been open and available with toilet, sink running water and paper towels. Last time I was there, last fall, there were 4 RVs set up at the back of the property. Seems like I remember one tent also. Might be something we could check on. For those that don't know the place, it has a good single lane ramp with a large floating dock. Directly across the river on the Indiana side is the new ramp Indiana put in. I guess Indiana thought Brandenburg needed some competition but I don't know why. Both ramps have good parking. Brandenburg ramp is a city park so has some police presents.

Just a thought.

Note, I get dibs on my big flathead spot. lol
