Good idea, voltage is not a way to tell if the battery is good. Even trashed batteries will sometimes get to 12.7 and then drop like a countdown timer if you put it on even a 1A load.
Resting voltage of 12.7 for wet cell, 13.1 for agm is fully charged.
Just off the charger (or after big motor ran for starting) could be as high as 14.8ish.
Resting voltage for most smart chargers (where they hold it when the battery is charged and charger is plugged in) is 12.8v for almost all mfg, for wet cell.
UPDATE: I went and talked to a guy that has owned an alternator shop for over twenty years...maybe longer. I told him I needed some help because I wanted to buy an expensive Fluke multimeter and there were so many models I couldn't even decide. He told me that really the best thing I could get to check batteries was the inexpensive cheese grater style load tester. So I went to my auto parts store and bought the same one they use....twenty four dollars.
I checked my deep cycle and it looks like it is ok but could probably use some more charging.
Ok I thought a fully charged battery should read 12.6 volts. ?
I just want to know if I need to charge it some more or is it GTG? View attachment 281827
Yes it is HF and it reads high. Or at least I think it does. Recently I put it on every battery in the driveway and they all read 13.85 v.
I like HF I'm not a huge fan boi but some stuff is good. I have some of their 12 ton jack stands that I dearly love.
But some of their stuff isn't so good. For instance I bought a kit of assorted hose clamps and used two them on my fuel line bulb....and they corroded very quickly. I couldn't even unscrew them because the worm gear failed. Like less than a year....
Now, that box or assorted hose clamps is worth its weight in gold if I need to get home. But long term...no.
You have a fish finder? Turn it on and get the voltage of a battery then see if your multimeter is the same. Do it at the plug so there isnt voltage drop.
Turn on unit, read volts, turn off unit and unplug. Put multimeter in the plug holes (doesnt matter which way) and see if the reading is the same.
