Rod tip eye repair

Hey guys I worked a groove into the first eye on my rod spooling a pretty big reel and still have over halfway to go. I don't want to keep going if it's gonna damage the line. Is there something I can use to fix the tip so I can keep going. I've heard of using epoxy but not sure what kind. Any help would be appreciated.

Matt, when you say the first eye, I assume you mean the eye closest to the reel. Either way, I would just cut a strip of electricians tape and wrap it tightly over the damaged area. That should cover the sharp area preventing the line from being damaged as you finish filling the spool. Have the line coming straight into the eye so it is not rubbing hard on that damaged eye.

I would want to get that eye replaces or replace the rod. Hope it wasn't your favorite rod. Others may have a better idea.

This is the second time I have heard of an eye being damaged by braid when putting line on a spool. It seems that when tension is on the line and it ride on one place o the eye as it is wound on, that produced a lot of heat and damages the eye.

I think the first person I heard that damaged an eye had third the end of the line to something and as the line went on the spool. it was dragging what ever was tied on. The weight and the line staying in one place damaged the tip.

When you are fighting a fish, two things seem to be different. One is the line is wet which should prevent some of the heat buildup. The other and most important thing is the rod is constantly moving, causing the line to shift from one place to another on the eye. This movement help protect the eye from being damaged.

I use my fingers out in front of the reel before it gets to the first eye to put some pressure on the line to get a snug wrap.

Anyway, sorry to hear you have an eyelet that is damaged.

good luck

Replace it with a good quality tip.

And buy or make yourself a spooling station! All the heat and abrasion of spooling a reel with line is not good for any rod. All you need for a homemade spooling station is the reel seat off a broken rod or $1 garage sale rod, some 2x4 and a piece of all-thread with two nuts and fender washers.

It's the eye on the tip of the rod. It's a Cabela's king Kat rod so I can get the whole rod replaced. I just need to finish spooling this reel. It's taken quite some time getting it where it's at and I still have about 3/4 the way to go. On the bright side I think I can get more on this reel than the manufacturer listed.
