Been looking at a Rippin Lips Medium Spinning or Medium Heavy Spinning/Casting, and the safe Ugly Stik Catfish. I am hoping to stay around $50, as the reel (Kastking 60L) is $50. Not picky on a trigger, as I'm not sure that I am even a baitcasting guy yet, and I have an extra spinning reel if the 60L doesnt work out.
I just saw this for the first time today. Was gonna say I just got a ripping lips Medium Light casting and out a kastking Rover 40 on it. I think it would be perfect for what you're talking about. But it sounds like you already have figured that out.
How do you like that medium light action rippin lips rod and is strong enough to handle the big one if you hook into one? Also can it handle up to 3 ounce of weight?
Hey Charles, if I knew I needed to throw 3 ounces more often than not, I'd probably get the medium. The medium light does great with an ounce or two plus bait. But I think you'd lose some distance with more than that. It's a fun rod though! As far as landing the big one, I guess that depends on what you consider big. I have every confidence it would land a cat up to about 20lbs. But you get a big 30-50 pound blue and you're going to be totally outgunned.
20 pounder is good enough for me all I fish for is eater size catfish with nightcrawlers, I just wanna make sure if I do land a nice one I can at least get a pic before I let him go. I just wanted to know if they were strong and reliable like the other rippin lips rods.
The medium light is perfect for eaters using night crawlers or stink baits, and I have no doubt it'd land a big one when you need it to. I've been really pleased with mine. Pair it with a Kastking Rover 40 and you have a great combo. I like the 40 because you really don't need a big reel on this rod, but it still has a bait clicker to make bank fishing easier.
Are you willing to meet half way? I can leave from Louisville after work on a Friday and that would make it a 30 minute drive for both of us and I will get that fishing rod off your hands. Let me know!
Charles, let me confer with the wife. I want to head to Academy for some crappie rattles. If she wants to go to Louisville with me it might be Saturday or Sunday. Would you be free Saturday or Sunday?
I pulled the rod out of the closet and cleaned it up last night, but the EVA foam was wet and wouldn't correctly show condition. I will get a pic for you tonight.
Would either of these work out for you? If not, please post up another location.

TWC wiskerwips are great for 2 to10 LB They will also handle big fish. I personally have seen 30's caught and know people that have gone 50 plus with them.
^^^ Agree- TWC rods are the best I've ever fished with in 63yrs. of fishing. They're well made here in the U.S. from quality components, light & responsive in the hand, and some models offer options not found with most other companies. Besides that, they also look good in your rod holder! :cool1:
My Whisker Whip is a one piece the 7'6" model. I believe the 10 foot model is a 2 piece. I sure could see the white and red pole with very little light last night. I could barely make out the white tip on the Rippin Lips rod.
Try a big game power series combo in the 8ft medium heavy I've tried it and cast great and the reel is rated for 20lb test but i still use 30 lb test no issue's the only thing is it only cast up to 4 oz of weight
