My old 6500 was in good order just wanted to check the brakes and oil it. Now the spool binds up. What the hell could I have done wrong on reassembly?

Jim, O agree with Chad that you may not have gotten the brake blocks pushed back in before you screwed the side cap back on. Now I would think the side cap would not go back into place with a brake block binding it but there is not a lot else to cause a problem.

You can easily loosen the three screws on the handle side and remove the side cover exposing the brake assemble. If you trapped a block, you may have bent the rod it slides on. This will depend on how old the reel is newer reels have a plastic spoke mechanism. Check it over closely. If it is bent you may be able to repair it. Or, if you damaged a brake block and have multiple blocks you can remove or lock that blocK (set) in. The reel should work correctly then.

There is not much else that can bind a 6500 spool but check to make sure your side cap knob for adjusting the spool tension is not too tight. If it is the newer style with the plastic part under the cap, make sure it is in the correct position.

let us know if you still have problems. These reels are easy to repair usually and parts are usually cheap.

Good luck.

Did a quick try this morning and it must have been the brake blocks. I think one of the 2 is jacked now but will take it to some water and toss it to see.

Probably time for a full service as this was a late 80s reel and never torn down. Where is a good place to send it? I don't trust the locals.

on the older reels with the two blocks. i have bent the metal tab that holds a block before. used a flat blade screw driver to straighten it. works great now. anytime you work on those reels. if you have to force anything stop and see why. they should just fall back together very easily.

Jim, I am not sure what the foot number on your reel is but the parts needed to replace what is damaged would cost about $3.99 for the brake block yoke and each brake block is .99. If it is setup like I think it is the brake block yoke is held in place with a simple wire ring clip. Brake block yoke is not the proper name but that is probably better than what it's proper name is.

If the brake block keeps sticking, you can try to straighten it again. If you used pliers or something with teeth, you may have left some burrs or ridges in the pin. Take some (very) light sandpaper and carefully smooth it out. If that doesn't work, you can remove the blocks or push them inward until they lock in place and the reel should work ok. You will just have to learn to use your thumb to better control the spool.

Good luck

This has happened to me a few times too. I have put the left side on before and it was in a bind. It has to fit into the slot on the pinion nut. Sometimes now I will try to slowly turn the handle while pushing the side plate assembly on. At any rate, do not force anything. Take it back off and have a look.

Actually I was wondering yesterday if the official SOP is to put the left side on while it's in free spool. Or if it would even work trying it that way.....push the free spool then put it together.

Not all worked. The spool tensioner has to be damn near removed to not interfere with casting.

Time for it to go in the shop.

Backlashed bad and cut a third of the spool off. So may as well go in since th line needs to be changed too.
