Just picked up two 8ft Shimano rods with a 209 penn and a 309 penn reels.

Heavy action rods. Reels seemed solid.

50 bucks for the two.

What kinda luck have others had with the penns?

Ya, mama said I don' need any more. "You can only use two here in south dakota." But it is nice to have one ready to bait and cast when ya snag up one.

I inherited a 209 Penn Pier when my brother in law died of brain cancer a few years ago it has had the level wind removed so I don't use it much for anything other than in the spring I put it on a uglystik gx2 heavy for my grand-daughter to use for flying her kite works real good for that purpose that thing holds a goodly amount of line.

I have a fleet of old penn 209 and 309 reels.i have about 50 penns really.i pick them up dirt cheap at garage sales.not many guys use these in michigan anymore.still smooth as a good quality made watch.rock solid reels.gear ratio is a little slow but it works out fighting large catfish.easy to birds nest too without practice.built to last..

I presently have two 309s and one 209. I like them and caught fish on one of the 309s last weekend but they are too big for what I do. They just have a lot of appeal for me. They actually cast pretty good.
