Caught a baby carp on Tuesday on sweet corn on my first hair rig. I know I need a net for these cause the hook just pops out of there mouth. Threw him back to get bigger next time he may get chopped up for bait.

I would have to make that decision if I were on the water also EF. I saw a guy bring in a 50+ pounder on a chunk of carp cutbait before. For me, like the catfish I catch, if they are big, they are going back in but if they are smaller, their is an option. You can see the carp cut bait beside his knee. Another benefit with carp is they seem to have a lot of blood. Helps with a scent trail.

I'm looking at the shirtless man using a rag to hold the fish. I suggest that he embrace the slime. Better yet rub it all over himself. It's good medicine.

But don't take too much slime from fish. They need it.

Haha isn't it funny when that happens? I remember when I was little, one day we went to the local pond to catch some carp to use as catfish bait. We tossed out dough balls made of wheaties (an awesome carp bait), which always worked for carp and goldfish. We spent that whole day catching catfish on the carp bait! That's cutting out the middleman!

Actually had a pole out with that setup, thought I'd see how well the hair rig worked on my other pole. Hair rig is only a snell knot with a loop on other end that you thread bait on. The hardest part is threading bait on the line but you would have to thread it on a hook anyways.
Seems to me either way works just fine. I have yet to catch any catfish on corn normally just catch my other bait bluegills.

I use either boiled field corn on a #2 to #6 hook or floating artificial corn on a #2 to #6 hook with a hair rig. I also use a method feeder with this setup or a PVA (dissolvable) bag with chum in it. I usually toss a little corn out to enhance the spot being targeted. I have found that the river carp fight harder bit lake carp are also fun.

Would that be a #2 or #6 Gamakatsu hooks? I've only ever used aberdeen hooks in the same sizes. I have not tried method feeders or dissolvable bags yet. Normally don't really fish for carp in the river but when other fish aren't biting I may give it a try this year.

Yah Wesley, that is my boat. I was doing a little testing on balancing the boat out. When I am by myself which is most the time most the weight is in the back. It does not start porpoising until I trim the motor up a little but still need weight in the nose. The round gray thing with the rope going to it is a 100 pound chunk go lead. A one gallon chunk. There was one just like it on the other side.

Here is my boat.

It's a 2070 so 20ft long and 6 feet wide at the water level. So far I have only gotten lost once. :wink1:

That's a nice looking place you got there. Thanks I was trying to figure out what the round thing was. A friend of mine had a boat that would porpoise at speed he had a whale tail on the lower unit. I don't know what technically causes it but it sounds like you do with the weight distribution. Wouldn't you have one or three big deep cycle batteries up front?

#14 ·
Yes I carry three batteries and they could be moved forward but that is a pain. Plus, the farther forward things go the rougher the ride. So in rough water you can give the batteries up front a pounding.

Porpoising is caused by a boat being out of balance. Generally meaning too mush weight on the transom. The true fix is to get weight up front but trim tabs or flotation extensions on the transom can stop the porpoising without actually correcting the problem.

The best fix would be to take a 2nd mate aboard and give him a seat assignment up front. :biggrin1:

Common problem with long flatbottom boats. Couple of pods will help. A 4 blade prop might help also, it will lift your stern more. Those motors love 4 blade props, I have the same motor in a 90 on a 17' 85" deep v.. I hit 50mph gps with it last year.

I use a couple of different types of method feeders. One I like a lot I got at Westside Bait Shop in Indy. Cost .45 cents I think. Just looks like a spiral spring with a plastic tube running through it. It goes on the main line like a sliding sinker. Then attach a swivel then the leader and hook with or without a hair rig. I mix 2 cups of panko (breadcrumbs) 1/2 cup Wheaties, and maybe 1/2 cup of oatmeal and add a small box of strawberry jello. This is the dry ingredients. Put that in a 1 gallon zip lock bag and mix well. Then, get a regular size can of sweet corn and also a can od white hominy. pour the liquid off and then add the corn and hominy kernels into the bag. Mix well. best if made a couple of hours before you go fishing. Bait you hook with corn. Squeeze the mix into the spring method feeder and cast it out. Works well.

The hooks I use are
Gamakatsu - G-Carp Hump Back

in size #4 or #2. I get them from BCT (Big Carp Tackle).

I have bait runner reels so the carp can run with the hook. But, if you have an Abu with a clicker, cast the bait out, turn the clicker on and press the release button. The carp will grab the bait/hook and run, causing the clicker to sing. just grab the rod and turn the crank to engage the spool. Set the hook and hang on. Their mouth is a little soft so don't set the hook too hard.

Carp will flat out take your pole with them have had a few dragged into the water.
I have two baitfeeders which I use for everything.
Usually most fish bite on my ultra light 4'6" uglystick with Pflueger Trion 20 though it is my bait pole it catches more fish than any other pole
The Abu needs the pawl replaced may go for the ceramic pawl. The Abu is my big channel cat and flathead reel.
Will look into these method feeders and hooks, thanks Tom

You are right about a carp taking off with your rod. It took me a while to get used to flipping the lever on my baitfeeders. Luckily I though of it before a carp borrowed my rod. That is why it is important to have an Abu in free spool with the clicker on. Then use your thumb to stop the spool and engage the reel. Sure is fun.

If you send me a mailing address in a PM (conversation) I will send you two or three of the hooks to try.

Ok, heading to Louisville early so time for bed.
