Was wandering if any of you guys fish strip pits ? If so any recommendations on some with good bank access? I remember going to one when I was younger and it was nice. We didn't catch much fish but the scenery was awesome. We night fished it too, just don't know where it was at.

We use to fish them all the time.

I remember when somebody clued me in why it was more than a coincidence that there were always a couple rectangular man made lakes by an overpass.

The strip pits I grew up around in southern Indiana were deep and unpredictable. Always dangerous to swim in. You might be in 4 ft of water and take one step and be in 100 feet of water. In the "way back when" days the miners were not required to backfill and help the land recover from the stripping of the coal. So many pits just filled with water.

Another windy day at the pit with chicken liver caught two small channel cats on the medium heavy Rippin Lips rod.

Got the ceramic pawl for the Abu installed and did some maintenance and filled it up with some 40lb Big Game solar and it's ready to catch one.
The Penn Fierce 2 Live Liner spooled with 40lb KastKing braid paired with the medium heavy Rippin Lips rod was casting liver far as I have ever casted chicken liver probably 30 feet or more than the Abu and Okuma against the wind. I may try to put some braid on the Okuma soon believe I have 15lb orange Stren on it currently.

I put 40 lb big game on my two big rods for this year. I had 50 lb on one reel last year for a short time, it was a pain to break off when I got snagged though. The last time I had broke off, the line hit one of my fingers and cut it so I went down to 30 lb test haha. Ive used braid before but feel like mono is better for what I do. I might mess with it again this year on one of my bait poles.

The braid will tear you up on a snag so I keep a dowell rod in my pocket and will need it for the 40lb big game too. I never thought of putting braid on the bait pole, normally just use 6lb trilene xl line.
I just started using braid on one pole last year and seen some benefits like casting distance, less sinker weight to hold bait in place with heavy current, and the no stretch really gives a good hookset and sensitivity to nibbles. I don't like the noise the braid makes on the rod guides or the price of the braid and that it breaks off fairly easy on rocks.
Now, I'm thinking of putting some braid on my bait pole . lol

Fished the gravel pit the other day caught a little striper, right after a guy told me they were stocked there last year. Then the DNR came I had 3 poles out and had my flathead rig in a forked stick not out. Well he thought it was out and proceeded to tell me the 3 pole rule until he noticed it wasn't out. lol. I told him, I was waiting on some bait to use that pole about that time I caught a little colorless bluegill, he checked my license and went on his way.
My first striper and bluegill for the year and the 2nd DNR visit.
I don't mind the DNR they really need more of them to hold the laws for trot lines and limb lines here in Indiana. I really wish they could cite people for littering also.

Went to the creek today for some chubs and ended up only catching some shiners on bread. Then I thought would head to Plover pit for a relaxing fishing trip since the White River was a little flooded. Not a single person was there when I got there. It was quite relaxing not having to fight the bugs and weeds where I was fishing. It was much cooler than Sunday with the wind blowing toward me today. Cast out 3 pieces of cut shiner put in rod holders and relaxed. No fish but only stayed until almost dark will have to try another spot next time. Just enjoyed sitting in my chair with the wind blowing in my face watching my lines soak.
