It's time again to get out and start carpin'!!
After a horrible session last weekend, I was looking forward to getting out again. This weekend the weather was much warmer, but wind was still a factor. Ended up having a great session.
Caught 4 Commons and 2 Grass Carp with my oldest son adding another Grass carp.

Felt good to be back out on the banks catching fish. Finally got to scratch that itch!!
Any other Kansas carpers back at it?

Kevin, I went out this afternoon looking for a good carp spot and did pretty good. The is not near the size yours are but I am working on it. Caught around 7 or 8 today in three hours.

Heeeyyyy!!! Awesome job Tom! That's a Beaut' you got in your hands there. What was your bait of choice today?
Hi Ray, I was using 2 kernels of floating corn on a hair rig. No Special sauce used. Then about 6 inches away was a method feeder with a mix of Sweet corn, hominy, panko and wheaties, flavored with a little strawberry jello. I went out today and caught between 20 and 25. Lost count. Used the same setup and packbait but used boiled field corn on some. It worked well also. The hard part seems to be keeping the leader from tangling around the method feeder.

I just ordered some Gama G curved shank #4s. The #6s seem a little small.

Learning as I go.

I went to the Red River (border between ND and MN) yesterday, using liver for channel cats. Nothing biting, so I put 4 kernels of canned sweet corn on a plain ole Eagle Claw hook, and had a 24" common in about 10 minutes. Great fun.

I always wonder when I read things, extolling how smart, spooky and wiley carp are, and that it takes skill to catch them. My experience is that they are the easiest fish in the world to catch.

You used a bait known to catch carp, tied a knot that you are confident in holding a fish, I am sure you had a sharp hook, you made a cast to a spot that you assumed would have carp in or near, you knew when the bite was and set the hook at the right time and you played and landed the carp. Do you not consider those skills?? It's not about being easy to catch, it's about knowing the species your after and modifying your tactics. How many carp did you catch on liver, Minnows, lures, etc. You changed your tactics to match the species, does mean it was easy.

Very Well said!!! You can't just go out there, not knowing what you're doing, and consistently catch nice Carp. It took me a good amount of studying, learning, asking questions, and time before I could catch Carp consistency. In the beginning it was frustrating.

Ray, I started out not pre-baiting because I was on the lake before I realized I had brought everything except my carp tackle bag. I wanted to use my spomb for the first time but no, it was still at home. I had boiled up 4 cups of field corn but did not use any of it. Maybe I will remember everything next time. I was fishing from my boat but just nosed it up on a muddy bank so it was about the same as bank fishing. Otherwise I would have trolled over the area I was casting and spread some corn out. Somewhat glad I didn't because I almost couldn't keep up with the bites I was getting.

Got after them again today. It was a successful session with it's share of frustrations. Ended up with three nice Commons in the cradle and three lost to hook pulls. Forgot a battery for a bite alarm, battery in another alarm died early in the session, so I only had one working alarm for most of the day. Can't explain the hook pulls, the fish I landed were all center bottom lip hooked, so I don't know:what:! Wind was bad, tipped the pod over once, big mess. On one run either I forgot to set the bait runner or it disengaged mid-run but the pod and both rods were almost pulled in the lake. Another mess, but I landed that fish so whatever:thumbup:
I caught some nice fish so I can't complain too much!

Those sure are some nice looking carp. Flipping that baitrunner lever has been tough for me to remember. I am finally starting to do it without thinking now though. Keep the pictures coming.

Have had a few slow weeks with cooler, rainy weather and stuff to do around the house.
Planned a trip to a close local lake on Saturday, wanted to do some prebaiting Friday to give myself a little edge since I don't fish this particular lake very often. So, I spent 30 minutes Friday night or so chumming out about 15lbs of bait at the spot I planned to fish. Saturday morning rolls around and I head out to the lake and notice park rangers manning the entrance. I was informed the park(which includes the lake) was closed for a marathon event. Ugh, all that prebaiting was a waste.
With the car already loaded and fresh bait made up, I had to switch up to fish somewhere else. Settled on the next closest lake, which is another lake that I do not fish regularly. Expectations were low, so the goal was to not blank. Fortunately I achieved that goal, but nothing spectacular. Put two Commons in the cradle, both post spawn singles that did give a good fight.
Bonus: I got one of the runs on video that turned out pretty neat.
I am also including a pic of a Grass carp that I caught in the previous weeks session.

View from the rod pod.

That first picture is sure a great shot Kevin. You have some nice carp where your fishing also. We, like you have had a stretch of rainy weather and the temps have been cool but it looks like it is in the process of changing right now. The problem I have now is I have three places I want to fish but I can't stay up 72 hours like I used to. Water here is still being held back to prevent flooding down the line but that should change before long.

Keep posting the great pics.

Thanks! The GoPro mounted on the pod like that gives a pretty cool perspective. I hope to get more takes on video.
Weather looks nice and warm this week, so hoping to get out this Friday!
