Could be turtles eating them. Colder water may make them easier to catch. I had something similar when I was fishing. Checked my fish on the stringer and the catfish looked similar. In a few minutes I saw the turtle. It was about the size of a dinner plate. I usually carry a 9mm Glock pistol but didn't have it then or I would have busted it.
Yeah. its really hard to say. just don't think I've caught 3 are 4 back to back beat up so bad. First time ive fished this spot in many years an they seem to be some pissed off fish. lol I think they missed me.
I have seen that kind of injuries on catfish that have been in a fish basket for too long. But the answer about them feeding on crayfish in the rocks really sounds logical to me.
I think I will get my lazy ass up and go fishing in the morning. A good friend of mine saved me some shad the last time he was at the lake. I have some big enough for cut bait and I have some bait that I made.
