I have 12 ABU 7000ics Pro Rockets (2010) and 8 ABU 6600 C4 (2005) bait-casting reels. I have never broken them down and really overhauled them. I am planning on getting new Carbontex carbon fiber drag washers, ABEC 7 Boca ceramic hybrid bearings, and need to know what else I should get if I am going to do a good job of breaking them down completely and rebuilding them. I am getting Cal's grease and TSI 321 bearing oil.
I saw in a YouTube video I need to get some metal c-clips to replace the plastic retainer on the cog-wheel, but I don't know what size or model # to get. They said I could get them off ebay for $1 apiece but didn't say exactly what size to get.
I also think I need to get some new springs for the drag washers because I sometimes leave them cranked down too tight for too long.
What else do I need to get to do a good job?
The reels work flawlessly; I just want to get some more casting distance and make sure they work well when trying to reel in the big fish.
I can not remember which of the 7000s you could damage by stretching the small springs because you did not remove the thumb disengagement lever. So do some checking on this before you take them apart. As in most things if you have to apply force, something is wrong.
Second, on the 6600s. If they are like the 6500s some damage can be done to the axle when removing the cog gear. The axle can even be broken off of the thin side casing that the gear is press fitted on. I think I would leave them in place but clean them using a solvent, then re-oil.
The spring washers for the drag system may be a good change if they have deformed some and are not giving you the range of tension during adjustment.
One part that generally gets more wear than most other parts is the worm gear pawl for the level wind system.
The 7000i cs rockets need the disengage lever removed before you try to take the handle side cover off. Look on e-bay for the e-clips. Same size that fits on the handle on the 6600's will work on the cog gear. Not sure what size fits the 7000iCS. I have done several this way. If you can't find the proper drag springs, I have used two sets of pliers to put the bend back in them. Gently! Good luck on your updates.
Sorry Toadfish. I was a little (very) slow answering. It's best to PM these days.
Buy dry lube ceramic hybrid bearings or you will have to clean the oil or grease out of them.
#4490 - e-type clips for the cog if you cut it off and for the handle.
#5131 - 6500 drag washers.
#51765 - 6500 pawl. Do not pry the cog gear off. Cut it off and then use #4490 e-clip to hold in it place or clean it in place.
#1116111 - 7000i drag washers.
#1116134 - 7000i worm gear pawl
#1119916 - spring under the pawl - You won't have to replace but they are easy to loose.
I'm not sponsored but I found the aluminum duel bearing ported cog gear and other stuff from mikes reel repair in Canada it took like 2 weeks for delivery, but quality stuff
I just tuned my older Sweden made 6500 c3...carbontex drag washers, from smooth drag. Ceramic spool bearings ABEC 7s, duel bearing worm gear with pawn upgrade stainless steel ABEC 7s, aluminum ported cog gear with ABEC stainless steel ABEC 7s...hope this helps
What is the advantage of using an aluminum cog gear? I always looked at the plastic cog gear a somewhat os a safety feature by breaking before more serious damage is done elsewhere. And I have a lot of Abu reels and have never had a minutes worth of trouble caused by the plastic cog gear.
I don't know why you would want a heavier Idler gear. For eons distance casters have tried to reduce the extra rotational mass and reduce friction.
There comes a point in a very long cast where rotational mass of the spool is used up and the lure begins pulling out line. At that point I do not understand why you would want the extra rotational mass of a aluminum idler gear.
You're right the plastic gears are strong enough as is.
The weight of it adds distance, plus It came with duel bear ABEC 7 bearings, the reel was a 1989 model, part replaced in that time the anti reverse catch...it got the duel catch replacement too.
Oh I love the ceramic bears they spin forever and a day, but if reel see saltwater or sand they get ate up, why I stuck with the ABEC 7 stainless steel for everything but the spool bearings, and I'll see how well those hold up
I'm casting out 8oz sinker and 6oz live bait so more mass for rotation helps. I'm cast long distance to a hole just in front of a wing dam in the trail waters of lock and dam 15 on the Mississippi river...thats a long cast on big heavy gear...with a lot of weight...so I like the extra rotiom from a heavier gear...but I don' use the stainless steal gear Abu offers...to expensive to get it ported and press bearing into it
AbuDoc, thanks so much for the numbers. I was able to find "#4490 - e-type clips" on Ebay. My Boca bearings came today; just waiting on everything to show up before tearing one down and rebuilding. I don't want to leave parts around and I don't want to wait too long between tearing down and putting back together (might forget something). thanks again!
I had thoughts along the same lines, kind of like if I increased the weight of the spool, I was taught on Abu that my dad got when in Germany b4 Vietnam, and by then the drag breaks where gone, and he never replaced them....thumbed the reel, and that how I learned to cast, to this date I use very little, to no brake on my casts, and I'm not bragging but it' be over 30 years since my last bird net or simple backlash
I was looking for ceramic pawls for my 7000ics Pro Rockets (year 2010)and found a listing on ebay: Fishing Reel Parts Ceramic Pawl fits Abu Garcia Ambassadeur reels 4000 thru 7500 --- https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fishing-Re...500/172861253300?_trksid=p2485497.m4902.l9144
I already ordered ceramic pawls for my 6600 c3's from Pure Fishing (they said they do not have ceramic pawls for my 7000 Pro Rockets).
I asked if his Ebay ceramic pawls fit my "7000ics ProRocket", and he just replied "Yes". I see his pawl has a part #5176-c; which is the same part # as the 6600's.
So, are these the exact same pawls, or is he mistaken?
Part #5176, 51765, 5176c are interchangeable.
BUT
They only fit the 4000 thru 6000 and the original 7000's.
The 7000i and the new 7000's use part #1116134
The new #1116134 is 10 to 12 thousands longer than #5176.
So I'm going to say just playing it safe that the parts you linked do not fit the
i-series or the new 7000's.
Just wanted to give a status report. All of my parts came in from Boca Bearings, Smoooth Drag, and Mike's Reel. But I have been waiting on parts from eReplacementParts.com. Like I said, I didn't want to break down my reels until all the parts were in. I ordered from eReplacementParts.com on November 25, I just got a email stating:
The purpose of this email is to keep you up to date with the status of your order from eReplacementParts.com.

Unfortunately, we were unable to ship the On Order part from our inventory and had to order it from the manufacturer. It should take 10-16 business days to ship your order out. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.
So, I am seeing that it was ordered mid last month and it will be another 2 or 3 weeks (plus shipping time). All because they are missing 1 c-clip. I have not gotten an email since the order telling me they would be slow getting parts out. I just can't believe a company stays in business doing things like that. Sorry to rant for a while, but eReplacementParts.com has really dropped the ball and I wanted to warn all you guys about doing business with them in future.
