I had probably one of the best nights I can remember for flatheads. They were big and plentiful. I lost another one that I'm sure went 60+ but I can't complain. Location is undisclosed but will be back again to get back the one I lost in the log jam. I kept the two twins and realeased the other three big ones. What a night I'm still grinning.

Wow Chris, that's just awesome! I've never seen flatheads bite like that-5 nice ones in one night is beyond my comprehension. Way to go, and good luck with that one that got away. Let me know if you need some help, lol.

We have had so much dang water that the rivers are running very very fast and for a long time. The lakes all in Oklahoma are way above flood pool and will continue to let lots of water until there normal, which should be around late Aug. Those back water creeks on these rivers the fish will congregrate just to get out of the current. I was just fishing a small creek off a very fast moving river.

The big one I believe just got done spawning. His skin was very dark and this head was all swollen up just like a channel cat during the spawn. I think it had been a while since he eaten and was hungry. I was at the right place at the right time with FOOD.:smile2:

CONGRATS ON THE GREAT CATCH.
JUST WONDERING IF ALL OF THE WATER AFFECTS THE SPAWN? I KNOW THE PLACES I FISH AROUND HERE ARE PREETY FLOODED WITH ALL OF THE WATER BEING LET OUT OF THE LAKES.
Great job with those flatties thanks for the pics.

Thanks for the pics Chris! Did you catch all those in the daylight? Your pics seemed to be during the day. Kind of unusual for that many flatheads. Congratulations on the fine evening of fishing!

All the fish were caught between 11pm and 8 am. All I had was camera phone with no flash and took the pictures during daylight before releasing the big ones. I actually caught the 37 pounder at 6:30 am after first light. I couldn't have fit him into my livewell with the others...too full.

With my new schedule, 1230 - 2100 off friday and sunday, it's going to be interesting trying to find time to fish.

Just out of curiosity what kind of specs on your equipment? It appears to have served you very well.

Larry,
I bought one ugly stick tiger rod 7 years ago and now have six of them. The reels are a mix of Abu 6500C3,7000C4LD and Penn 310GTI's. Line is 25lb P-line and 5/0 to 10/0 circles and kayles. Nothing special on set up's using either carolina rigs or big slip floats 90% of the time. I have fourteen rod holder bases on my boat and use up to 7 rods at a time.
I just happen to be blessed being located to some of the best populations of flatheads probably anywhere. I don't get many fish over 30 pounds on a regular basis but there's lots in the 8 to 25 pound range. Gear and equipment is important but spending as much time on the water as you can always pays the biggest dividends....at least for me.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply to my question. It is obvious you are very well prepared for the task at hand and totally knowledgeable in using it properly. I always like to know what others are using when it comes to their particular arsenal and methods. You sure did a great job and I really appreciate the reply about your equipment. Take Care and Good Fishing to ya.
Congratulations Chris, Sounds like it was a slug fest:wink:. Glad you released the big ones and hope you get another shot at the 60 lber:big_smile:. Good strategy also those fish can't fight the current all the time and are stacking up in the current breaks.

Thanks for all the kind words from everyone. I catch my fair of flatheads but I've never landed two over thirty pounds in one night. The combination of flatheads coming off the spawn and strong current pushing them into the backwaters concentrated them and looking for food after spawning. That's at least my theory.
