Whetstine family edges out the competition taking First and Third

This past Saturday the French Bottoms at St. Joseph, MO was the site of the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail qualifying event. Nearly 60 of the top anglers in the region were competing not only for cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2007 Cabela’s King Kat Classic at Junction City, Kansas.

The fishing was slow on the Missouri River for the anglers, but the excitement was high as over 120 spectators watched one of the most exciting events of the year with only 6 pounds separating the top 3 places. This was also a special media event with KQ2 TV in St. Joseph on hand to cover this special event.

Taking first place was the Troy, Kansas team of Roger Whetstine JR and Cole Whetstine with a weight of 37.75 pounds. Roger and Cole were fishing near Kansas City, MO in 20 feet of water using cut shad. Roger and Cole took home a check for $3,000.00 for fist place in the event.

In third were Roger and Jason Whetstine of Troy, Kansas with a weight of 31.8 pounds. Roger and Jason were fishing near Brownville in 18 feet of water using cut bait and took home a check for $500.00 for third place.

In fourth place was the nationally known team of John Jamison of Spring Hill, Kansas and Mark Thompson of Williamsburg, Kansas weighing in 24.1 pounds.

Finishing out the top 5 was the Atchison, Kansas team of John Griebat and Jim Pyle with a total weight of 21.5 pounds.

Taking big fish of the event was the second place team Bernard Sutton of Troy, Kansas and Jamie Embry of St. Joseph, Missouri with a 32.25 pound cat. Along with their second place payback the team received a new Minn Kota trolling motor along with an additional $500.00 from Rolling Hills Toyota in Kansas City, Missouri.

A special thanks goes out to the St. Joseph CVB for their support of the event along with Rolling Hills Toyota for providing an additional $500.00 for big fish of the event. Just a footnote as the Big fish sponsor was RollingHills Toyota of St Joseph and it is kind of funny as when I set the tournament up I was not in the car business but as of 2 weeks ago I am now employed by Rollinghills Toyota as a Sales Consultant. I will see what I can get out of them for next year as I really want the Cabela`s King Kat tournament trail to come back and grow as we can expect great things next year.
