lowrance x135 speed probe

I bought a lowrance X135 last year and the accessory speed/temp probe, but didn't hook it up, the speed probe that is. These last couple days I have been messing around with my boat. I turned on my unit and spun the wheel on the speed probe and I got nothing. So my question is, is that normal and what makes it work in water, Please explain!
