Yes yes, especially after sitting in the bed of your truck for 6 months and then going out on one 4th of july with a full moon. Around 4 in the morning you're sitting there snoozing in your boat with your pole in your hand and all of a sudden you feel the tug and pull back before even waking up.. Ah good times.

While I've fished here in Illinois for the last 2 yrs. I've had my best luck using Jeno's stink bait from Carlyle on a #10 trible hook. All mine were 2-8 lb. channels just the right size for eating.

I've found that live perch catches all of the big three consistantly, so does cut perch but not as well as live.
Cut shad catches blues better than anything.
Shrimp will catch channels really well.
Danny Kings is hard to beat for channel fishing also.

One of the most effective baits I ever used on trotlines was illegal. I was running low on bait and I happened to see a big white fish floating down the river. I ran over to it, and discovered that it was a long dead striper. Now, it's illegal to use game fish for bait in this state, but I needed the bait, and I couldn't see just letting that stinker go to waste, so I cut it up and put it on my hooks. Didn't have to scale it, cause all the scales had already fallen off. But the skin was still good and strong, so it stayed on the hooks extremely well. The turtles quickly ate most of the meat, but had to leave about 1/4" of the meat next to the skin, which was enough to still be very attractive to the catfish. You can be sure that I remembered to remove every trace of that fish from my hooks before I quit for the day, though.
