you are right on with the light line fishing and the fun it brings
of all the times i used Premo i caught a bunch of 1,2,3, lbers but never expected to get a 5 lber. and then I hear about guys catching 7/8/10 lbers too...
i did a test with:
liver
stink bait
anchovie heads
anchovie bodies
shad heads
and shad sides but premo was the only thing that worked
i got one nibble on the liver but i think it was a striper
where's the carp at??? that's my go to bait for channels, but i do use shad quite a bit. i get as many cats on carp as i do shad, but carp withstand the manhandling of repeated long casts.
I have used nightcrawlers & Liver and has always had the best of luck. I've tried some of the other baits and none of them keep up with the basics.

I love the bluegills! They are great for a wide range of different sized cats. They stay on the hook well when you have the nibblers.
You can not beat threadin shad though, but one hit and they are gone! :sad2:
my best channels have been caught on the in order of choice night crawlers ,chicken livers and then hot dogs my largest channel was taken on a crawler two large crawlers on a number 6 treble hook 14 lb channel 3 spring ago near the west carrolton dam then chicken liver i love good for lakes to keep the bait robber aka bluegills from stealing my worms hot dogs from time to time but turtle seem to dig them as much as channels happy new years:smile2:
I am a DK user. I like DK because it is quick and always handy. It works all the time. I like using live shad and perch too. That is whats good about fishing for cats.,There are so many types of bait to use. The best part is just being outdoors on the lake. Better than working any time.
around home at ponds and creeks i use night crawlers/ livers.
but at the lake on the catillac when im seriously persueing nice fish its cut /whole shad 100%!
If I can only take one then I would choose stink bait
