I haven't hunted coon in 40 years, but a friend had a black and tan that was pretty good, open mouthed and easy goin. He had a walker that kinda scared me, it was closed mouth till it got em treed. What a team. One nite they followed coon into a den, we were standing about 2 feet on top of them and could barely hear them. We dug em out and they chased the coon up a tree and we shot it and let em have it. That walker climed trees after coons. The black and tan got run over on a highway, and the walker started running deer. Another guy gave me a black and tan, it was dumber than a nail. I lost 2 dogs one nite, they never barked, so I got another one and fighred I'd follow it, never found em, lost it too. A few days later it came back, and the other two showed up miles away. Maybe running deer too. That was the last time I was coon hunting. But it sure was fun.

We have a dog we found underneath one of our deer stands two years ago. He was starved & covered with ticks; so weak he couldn't even get up. My nephew drove him back to camp on his 4wheeler. We ran local ads, but no one claimed him.(He was wearing a collar). Anyway, we brought him home & he is the best ole hound. We've never used him for coons, but he sure barks at the cats, squirrels, & raccoons that come up by the house at night!
If you get a chance, check him out on my Home Page in my photo album; you can't miss him.....he's the really spoiled-looking one, named "Red".

I have coon hunted with all the hound breeds. I have seen good ones
and bad ones in all breeds. I wanted a hound that handled well, was
not bad to fight at the tree or in the dog box. Would hold the tree under
pressure and could be hunted by himself or with other dogs. If he
could do these things I could get use to the color.

I've hunted with most all of the breeds and have had good and bad ones in most breeds too. My favorite hounds were a pair of redbones I had almost forty years ago when I still had strong legs and youth on my side. I have to say that nothing gets my blood going even today more than listening to a hound on a hot trail on a cool night. Coon hounds are very special and a good one will give you memories to last a lifetime.

Where im from its mainly walker dogs. I dont own dogs myself but coon hunt alot with friends and so on since i was grown up. I have found the best dog I ever hunted with was a true red bone male. Dont like a dog to bark on track much and stay on tree till the cows come home. This dog does it. Around here a good redbone is worth twice of what a good walker dog is. My 2 cents

Default I was raised with hounds...

I was in the dog house with them most of the time growing up.:smile2:

We raised Treeing Walkers, Blueticks, Black and Tans and Redbones but the Redbones were my favorite, hands down.
