How do you "cut" your cut bait?

When your using the head hook it thru the eyes or lips then step on it and crush it, seems to work better but you need to rebait more often if its a slow bite to keepum fresh. I think one of the keys is to keep it fresh.

On large baits I cut them in sections like below

depending on what the bait is cause i've used whole dead crappie next to an ariator at a pay lake and caught three nice flatheads,20#+. with in 5 minutes of settin up. as soon as it hit the water they where smashin them.

Depending on the size of the bait fish, I always use the head with part of the gut pocket, the center section with gut pocket, and sometimes part of the tail section, but I usually discard the tail. The head with gut pocket is usually the best part of all for me, with the center section running a close second.

i usually use about 6-8 inch shad where im at and just cut the tail off and 3 to 4 cuts on both sides of the shad.
thats if i wanna wait 10-20 minutes for a bigger catfish and i usually put the bait on a #7 or #9 hook. thats how i catch my blue's

if im going for a faster more number method of fishing i downsize my hook and throw on a peice of cutbait about an inch long and inch thick little cube. seems to do great for me! thats how i catch my channel's:wink:

In the warmer months, I use the head and the gut unless the shad is 6" or better, then I'll make two chunks of the gut section, discarding the tail.

In the winter, I'll cut the tail off just behind the vent and hook the bait in the eyes. The larger bait works well for the trophy-sized blues of the wintertime.

If the water is clear (less red), I'll scale the shad first and flip the scales into the water as a visual aid to the catfish.

I usually cut the heads off then I will cut down to its spine and go down like a fillet then i will cut the fillet in pieces and use them

I fish most of my bait alive however if i do cut i like cuttin the head and some gut off and the rest of the gut piece off of the tail. never caught that many on tails but it may be cause i dont use them much lol
