i like to cut them in half and use the upper half when i am drifting and when i am anchored i pull the gut out and fillet one side and put it below the gut to hold it on

Tommys post is right on the head with gut pocket is always the prefered piece.

Like the majority, I use first, the head with some gut pocket, then the section with the gut pocket. I have rarely caught anything with the tail section, so over the years, I've pretty much tossed that portion overboard. I've caught the most on heads.....even sunfish heads.

cut bait
I always use the gut. Sometimes I'll cut off the tail only, sometimes I'll cut off the head and the tail, sometimes I'll use the head and the gut pocket, and sometimes I'll use the fillet and the gut pocket, but I always use the gut in some combination.

Most of the time I cut into strips and thread it on the hook.Also cut in chunks some times also using every part of the fish.Here we have problems with the bowfin hitting the cut fish we use.Kinda gets aggravating catchin those rascals cause they have teeth:0a35:
