I prefer the heads, cut with some of the gut pocket left. I have used all of the methods. Seems like I catch the biggest ones on the heads.

cuttin bait
If it is a small bait say in the five inch range i just cut it into chunks some big some small, If the fish is bigger then i will fillet both sides and cut the rest into chunks. Personnaly i have not found a real big difference in what part of the baitfish i use, I thinks the freshness of the bait speaks louder then what part it is. hope you find the answer to your question:big_smile: tight lines:cool2:

I do a little bit of everything. Skipjack I will use chunks, filets and always the head. I never use them whole though.
Bluegills I usually use whole. The really big ones I will either cut two big chunks or filets. I like to have a variety of baits.

works for me
Just cut the tail off smaller baits aka under 10 inchs. Make some cuts in the side in each side, head hook and fish

I've used them all, but have had better success with the head. Here lately i've been using a head gut sandwich. I've been putting a head on, piece of the gut pocket and then another head. It's working.

for the blues.
Generally using cutter shad in the 8" to 18" range. When I first start fishing will try several different cuts to see what they are hitting on then switch over. Most times though, will either go with half cuts, or 3"to4" chunks, and will always have 1 or 2 whole shad out there. when they don't really like that, i'll fillet, then use smaller pieces. All depends on what they seem to be hitting on at the time. But definitely use the heads.

i use shad and the best part for me is i cut head right past the eyes off and then across the stomach. the gills hold alot of blood and send off some nice scent. hope that helps. i also cut the tail off and use remainder for the next pole :smile2: i have caught a flatties on a whole 5'' shad with cuts along the sides to let scent come out

For Skips if I'm fishing for big catfish I'll fillet them and cut each fillet in half and use one of the halves for bait. For smaller fish I'll cube the fillets. If the skips are small I'll use a whlole one and hook them through the lips. For shad, I'll either cut them in half or hook them through the lips and use a whole one depending on how big they are. Lot's of different methods but these are mine and they usually work for me.
