    Default Tips

Ok after having been off of the water for four weeks now, I have to get out tonight/early morning when it's a little cooler. I'm thinking of just fishing the dam as I don't have to haul a lot of gear. There are a million rocks along the bank at the dam here and while I have fish there several times I am looking for any extra tips on how to rig for the riprap. you lose a ton of gear fishing there and i'm trying to minimize that.

I would use a bobber set up about 8 to ten inches off the bottom myself to keep bait and weight out of the rip rap. Hope this helps

You could also use a bottom set up with the weight you using tied to much thinner line than main line so the weight will break off and not your whole set up. I hate rip rap but holds lots of fish.

Yeah I typically use the thinner line on my sinker for that reason. I was actually thinking of trying a bobber as well for the first time.

Chuck beings ya know yer gonna get hung up anyway in spots like that here on the Mo i use a 2-3 oz sinker on 12-17 lb tyed in my 3 way. my bait leaders is usually 12-18 inchs long in rip rap put a small bobber about 4-5 inchs up from the hook. and keep yer line tight and settin close to ya. when they take the bait they seam to smash and dash so hang on tight.

    Default My 2 cents worth

When I switched to circle hooks I cut my tackle loss in half. Circles don't get snaged up like J hooks so your loss is much less. Use the lighter line for the weights and that will also save lots of tackle.
Don't give up fishing in the rocks, thats where many of the good cats hang out. They feel protected in the shadows and that's where the crayfish and Bluegills hide.

I pretty much stick to the circles and the lighter sinker line. I was just wondering if there was anything else. Thanks everyone for the great advice.

    Default rip rap trick

I use a slipfloat in rip rap and just keep lowering it until u notice it hitting bottom then bring it up a foot so your bait floats right above the rocks keep making your runs like that. Also I like live bait in the rocks on a big slipfloat that they can't take down. seems like the gills struggle hard to get down and hide and that seems to motivate hard hits. Hope this helps good luck.

    Default lil help chuck

Hey rig up your 3 way rig 4 to 6 ft long on the weight end about a foot long on the hook end with a 3 to 4 inch clip on cigar bobber on the bait line right at the 3 way swivel on the line rigged in line. Smash hit on a bait will break the lighter weight leader. Use junk to put it down in the rip rap spark plugs, line tied rebar chunks, 3 to 4 big lug nuts on some wire, Rail road spikes a fav, hell even rocks line tied will work. Save your lead lota times just a dozen hand picked rocks are all you need. Kinda look like this the bigger clip on cigar bobbers will help pull the bait up off the bottom. Spring out wrap 2 times each end presto.
