Anyone else fish the manistee river?
I see a lot of guys that fish the grand on here, but never anyone from north. I fish the Manistee river and the reservoirs along it (Hodenpyle and Tippy). Anyone up here around Manistee County?

Hoddinpyle & Tippy Pond!
I have a place near Irons, and have tried Tippy twice without success on cats.. I did catch a few small Walleyes. I launch in the south arm off #55 I also fished Hodenpyle once last summer, and only caught 3 small Channells. Do you fish Tippy?? Just read a story that says there are plenty of Channells in Tippy?? How have you done?? I have never got much in communications on this site about the northern area?? I'm thinking about hitting Tippy hard in the next couple weeks. How do you do on the Manistee?? Do you fish downstream of the dams??

Yeah I catch them on Tippy. There is a lot of them in there but I know how you feel, they are tough to find very often. They are usually in the 5-10lb range. Channels have been stocked in there multiple times (in 2009 most recently). Last year I found a bunch of illegal set-lines out there many of which had fish on them. Whoever put those out weren't checking them, these fish had swollen faces and were really worn out. Hodenpyle supposedly has a bigger population, but I don't get there that often. On the river, I do well between Hodenpyle and Tippy, but not very good below Tippy. Every summer I try to take at least one float trip from Hodenpyle down to Red Bridge. There are many deep holes that hold fish. I catch a lot of walleyes through there as well. I know what you mean, nobody seems to talk about catfishin up here. Maybe not many do it? Anyway, good luck and maybe I will see you out there.

I hope you reported those set lines. If you didn't, it's not too late.

Good man.
In order to protect our resources and our sport, we have to be willing to call out people who flaunt the law. The DNR can't do it without help from us. People will only stop wasting wasting fish & game when the culture we create teaches them that it is not cool or even ok to poach & waste. Even if set lining was legal here, what they were doing was just plain wrong.

I couldn't agree more!
I have a 11yr old nephew that I have been trying to instill the values and respect that I have for the outdoors upon. We need to teach the next generation or it may be lost.
