Default Get you own worms for FREE!

I cleaned out a cooler last weekend that had bait in it and used a little bleach mixed with water to sterilize everything. After I was done I went to the back yard and dumped the bleach water out, after letting the cooler sit a few minutes, I came back to put it away and low and behold, there was worms everwhere from where I dumped out the bleach water. Seems the bleach water drove them out of their holes to the surface. I tested my new found theory again and again with more bleach water and next thing I know I had a whole glob of red worms and night crawlers. Good cheap and easy way to get worms if u like to save a buck as I do. Just passing some knowledge to everyone. Btw, the worms didn't seem affected by the bleach contact, although I did rinse them off once they were all collected

Didn't really measure the mixtures, but a good estimate would be 1 cap full for every 5 to 10 gallons. I just made my mixture where you could stick your fingers in it and smell and definitley tell it had bleach in it.

I did the same thing a few times with pine sole when spraying out the dog pins . Once it all ran off the concrete the nightcrawlers were everywhere .

i've heard you can do the same with walnut shells, i never tried it but all you do is put a dozen or so shells from walnuts into a 5 gallon bucket of water..stir it up let it sit till the water takes on the color of the shells and dump..worms will be everywhere so i'm told...this would be somewhat seasonal i guess as you would have to wait for the walnuts to grow...i will be trying the bleach thing for sure

Knowing my luck the EPA would show up at my door or one of those big worms from "Tremors" would pop out at me.

Tannic acid IIRC. Acorns might work as well and likely more plentiful.

I'm foggy on it but somewhere inside the densness of my heads interior it seems the mix can be used to tan hides as well.

I've seen it happen just after washing the cars dump the bucket of soap water on the ground and the crawlers will come out...now that it's gettin dark, think I'll go give the bleach a try...thanks for the tip!

Not trying to hijack the thread but since were on the worm catching subject, is it true that if you put a red bandana over your flashlight, it doesn't run the worms back in their holes as fast as a regular light will?

That works great and also a green light works, the regular light spooks them and walk softly as the vibration effects them.
