So got the invite from the girlfriend's father to go turkey hunting today, was gonna hunt a farm where we have seen plenty of birds but have been a little shy do far this season. Take a ride over to the farm to see if anyone else is planning to hunt so we know safety wise and so we done mess them up. No one else was planning on hunting but the farmer told us to try another property that he saw a real nice bird on a daily basis with two hens.

So we walk out the front door this morning at 5 walk over the hill pick out a spot set up the a Jake decoy with a hen. We were set up by 5:25. I was in front with the gun and he was 15 feet behind me with the calls and video camera. Around 5:35 we heard the first goble. Must have heard heard him goble 50 times, around 5:50 gave a few hen tree calls to let him know we were around the corner. heard him quiet down around 5:55. I motioned back saying I think he flew off the roost since we didn't hear him call for a minute or two. I look back to see him running in from 60 yards away, then he slowed up about 35 yards out right when he got into camera range and walked in to about 25 yards when he finally lifted his head. Took a shot and stunned him and he jumped up and landed 5 yards back when I let him have a second shot. The second shot took him out. Had my Tom at 5:58.
Huge mature bird. Weighed 22lbs, had a 10 inch beard, with his longest spur at 1&11/16 inches and his other spur 1&9/16 inches. Estimated at either 4 or 5 years old.

Went up to the mtns foor a few days... Called in a big tom but couldnt get a clear shot at him. He was just behind enough thick cover that i couldnt get a shot, it was late in the day and i ran out of time to work him any farther. Always do good around 1030 till quitting time because the gobblers usually leave the hens by then and are searching. This bird was fired up and from where i was i just couldnt seal the deal. But nice gobbler, goodjob!

I was out during the week at 3am everytime the lightning rumbled a gobbler would gobble. Some entertainment for a slow night.
