    Default BORING?

I happen to like the kind of racing we've been seeing this year, but I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to auto racing. I like seeing a contest where the fastest car wins, rather than where the nastiest aggressor takes the checker. Save that for wrestling. However, I find myself wondering about the way things are going in NASCAR this season, as far as the popularity of the sport is concerned. Facts is facts, and the truth of the matter is that a lot of folks watch this stuff to see wrecks. I don't know if it is just a matter of luck, or if NASCAR has done something behind the scenes, but the last few races have been like a very fast funeral procession. Maybe they have just gotten far enough along with the development of the COT to make them accident-proof. I mean, who ever heard of green flag pit stops at Bristol or Martinsville, or the final 234 laps at Texas under green? Yeah, we had drivers complaining, "I can't drive this piece of chit!" but they could still go fast without hitting the wall. It was so "quiet" last night that the slightest wiggle would bring the Waltrip Bros out of their seats, trying to pretend they were excited!

It seems to me that there has been almost no agressive driving this year. Do you suppose NASCAR has quietly laid down the law on it, in light of the Kyle Busch incident(s) last year?

I'd like to see what our "panel of experts" has to say about this. Do you think the lack of accidents will hurt the popularity of our sport, and what will NASCAR do about it?

I am with you on this DanG........... I cut the tv off with 160 laps to go last nite and went to bed ........... I don't know the problem , but racing sho ain't like it was before Jeff Gordon came on the scene ................ I am not knocking Gordon at all ,, but that is when the face of Nascar began to change ............

If you believe that racing is a "gentleman's sport" , go to ur local dirt track .................. now to me , that is real racing !!!!! ......... maybe what I am saying is " too much money now in Nascar" for somebody to get air lifted with a right upper cut in the pits ................................

It is what it is and it ain't gonna change any time soon ................

    Technology.
You see the in car shots last night going into a turn running 200 mph?
No different then running down the straights.
They used to have to drive those cars. Technology has taken a lot of driver out of it.

I don't know what, if anything, Gordon had to do with it, unless he was just good enough to win without wrecking anybody. But I'm talking about just the last few races, as opposed to what we were seeing last year. I don't mind seeing some bent up sheet metal, but I prefer that it would be from hard racing, rather than intentionally "taking someone out." What it looks like to me is that NASCAR has told them that they'll be grounded if they touch anybody. Last night, only 3 cars ever even touched the wall, and only one of them brought out a caution. Maybe it is that too much emphasis is being put on the Cup points. Edwards as much as said so on the radio last night, when his CC was trying to get him to go faster but he said he was looking at the big picture. I think the Chase brought a lot of new fans to the sport, but may be beginning to hurt more than it helps. Since they started that crap, you are nothing if you don't make the Chase, and you don't get much credit for winning a race. I kinda like the points system in Formula One, where you get 3 points for winning, 2 for second, one for third, and diddlysquat for everything else. Heck, the way this is set up, the second place driver can get just as many points as the winner.

BTW Coach, I do go to the dirt track, though not locally. I travel to East Alabama a couple of times a year and pretend to be part of the crew on my buddy's car. He's from S. Carolina and goes over there for the State and National Championship races. That's some good racin' there!!

Mark, is the technology that much different from last year? Did they come up with Collision Avoidance Radar or something? Hell, last night even Montoya couldn't find anything but a pop bottle to run into! *LOL*

If you ask me, the races at Texas are the most boring to watch. It just has that character where it is hard to make up time on if their car is average. Its one of those 3 groove follow the leader tracks. After the changes at Bristol, same thing.

i wouldnt say ilike to see crashes but they do make it a lil more exciting and let you wind down a second to make changes and get going again.

last night as well as a few other already have been boring IMO. bristol was an exciting track because of the tempers and crashes. just how it was. and the changes? well we seen by 1/2 full stadium that alot agree with mw there too. and it hit home hard enough that i would assume the surface is already coming, or up by now changing it to a narrower flatter straight track like it was.

the reason for alot of the caution free racing is the c.o.t. in decades past on a corner a car that broke loose almost always spun bringing out a caution. now we see 1/2 the cars go around turns sideways and continue on. hell kyle bush spun twice at daytona at 205 mph in the shootout and won the damb thing.
