what to do if Santee catches you off gaurd.

4-2, I-95 area I read that our friend had to cut anchors because of the storm that poped up.

I carry extra life jackets and throwables on my pontoon just for this. Your stuck and cant get the anchor up or need to leave ASAP. Tie you anchor line to a life jacket or throwable of a old bleach bottle and leave,,,come back later and get you anchors back.


Remember you will never regret leaving a few fish but you will regret being caught in a Santee storm.

Also have a plan...where will I go if I cant get back to the ramp or dock?

Billfish76 taught me this while anchoring off the coast, and it comes in handy if you have to chase a big fish like the 300 pound tiger shark we caught. Storms and rough seas are another good time to have something like this in place and ready to go.

We did that at the jetties at Wrightsville beach with a 30 lb king. Great tactic when u get in a pinch! Thanks for the post!

Yes Sir, Santee is a wonderful place, but you'd better keep an eye on the weather all of the time, or that lake will KICK YOUR BUTT! Especially if you're right in the middle of Moultrie and it's 8 miles to shore.

Well this is 2 more items for my boat then bouts for the end on my anchor lines for this situation.

good advice Curt, When we first attempted to get the anchors free I made the comment to my wife that we needed to get buoys for the anchor lines. I wish my everyday vision was as good as my hind sight...lol.

As for the plan of action, I always make it a point to know where other landings are, or if it is bad enough I am not scared to beach my boat in somebody's yard. :)

I have done like wylie. I have a small bouy on the end of each anchor rope to either leave in a hurry or to chase big fish. I bought 2 for $4 at academy and put strips of reflective tape around the for an easier find in the middle of the night. I've also kept an eye out for empty boat houses. We've had to use one on wateree one night we ignored the weather forecast.

Funny part was my buddy said "what if somebody comes down and tells us to leave their boathouse?" I said he'd have to fight me to get me to leave". But it all worked out and we are still alive. My truck on the other hand didn't get so lucky at the landing. She had over $4 grand in hail damage, including broken windows. That's just my idea on bad weather plans. Good luck out there
