    Default 4-2, I-95 area

We fished Monday afternoon and into the night. Not much to tell, we tried the river channel, drifted the flats outside the channel, then around I-95 bridge. We finally caught a 16lb Blue at dusk, then had some crazy wind come in from the south that messed our night up. We were double anchored and with no warning the lake went from calm with a light breeze to 3ft nasty waves with at least a 25mph wind. It got so rough so quick, I couldn't control the boat enough to get anchors back, so needless to say it was a pretty easy decision to cut both anchors instead of risking it. We headed back under the bridge and took a right to seek the shelter of the dike further down the bridge. Was definately a little un-nerving traveling sideways with those 3 to 4 footers hitting us from the side of the toons. We made it safely to the dike and with no anchors I tied up to the fishing bridge and threw a few rods out while my heartbeat slowed back down as well as the wind. We did manage to catch an 8lb Blue while tied up, then once the wind got back down to the 10mph the weather channel was saying it was...lol...we headed back to the landing in Jacks Creek. Once all was said and done, the loss of two anchors was much better than going overboard for sure! Will be moving my boat down towards the lower end of the lake after these rainy days pass.

Just a word of warning for you guys that don't fish here much, please be careful. I have been through some pretty nasty stuff on Santee and that one had me a little gun shy for about an hour afterwards. by the way, the weather forcast for that night was 8 to 10mph winds, so don't believe everything they forcast for sure! Luckily I knew the Bridge at the other end would provide cover.

I have had the same thing happen, especially on the north bank. A couple of Junes ago, my brother in law were anchored up at earlu dusk and were getting more than our share of bites. Winds were out of the west at about 5 to 8 and life was good. I looked to the south near Cypress Shores area and said hey it looks like a storm coming, it was no storm just wind. It went from a lazy chop to 4 footers n about 30 seconds nd kept coming. Out of nowhere it went from a beautiful evening to weather that I would not have left the dock in. No clouds, no rain, just a steady 20-30 out of the south. Pulled anchor and got really wet on the way in. North side of the lake i tough and always choppy, but this was an exception. An hour later it laid down.

Yes, it can and does go sour in a heartbeat sometimes. The weather service almost never has it right, they even have a number listed for boaters to call and let them know what it really is at the time. lol

BTW, Robbie, have you fished the Re-diversion Canal any this year? I've been wanting to try the area near Russelville above the canal, but the fish lift has been down for the past 2-3 weeks, so not much bait has been passed through there. They did get it running again on Monday, as far as I know. I sometimes have pretty good luck out on the flats when they are pulling current through the re-diversion, but that has only occurred from dusk to about midnight lately.

Tommy we have fished the rediversion twice so far. We just got back from down there and only caught 1 blue about 10lbs. They were pulling some water but the fish didn't want brim heads, perch heads, herring heads, or cut bait either. We fished from the bank tonight. Last time we went was about 3 weeks ago and we anchored the boat at the barrells on the russellville end, didn't catch a thing that night.

Glad to hear you are all safe and fine. Ask Welder about the river grapple in this type of situation. It may be a good choice before making a decision on new anchors.

    Default Extreme danger!

Don't let this post fool you...the river grapple was invented for powerful rivers like the Missouri. In a situation with waves that crash into the boat the river grapple needs a chain tiewrap device mounted to it for freeing it. In Santee the best thing to do is get to shore if your boat can't handle the waves. A mushroom anchor or even a cement center block would've better. The block could be left behind without losing your investment. I like the river grapple but not in that situation on General Marion's windy lake. River grapple would kick butt in the rediversion when they push water...no breaking waves like the ocean
