Went down the the Truman Dam today and that is a horrible place for bottom bank fishing. Every cast out was almost an instant snag and lost everything, do people actually Catfish there? Where are the good spots in the area? I tried both sides and many differant locations with no luck, just snag central. Might have to pick up Crappie and White Bass fishing lol

<lol> yes people actually catfish there. It is snag city, but your rig and gear can keep things down. Don't know what your using, but you need a good reel. A long rod that lift you over the rocks and snags. A good rod should be at least 10ft minimum and many use 12ft or longer. A good three way rig will also help you out as well.

3 ways work good there below the dam i use either 15-17 lb on my sinker side a the 3 way and run 40 lb or bigger to the hook side sinker breaks off easyer that way. looseing either on can be costly . Long rod will remedy a lot of the getting snagged up prob.keep yer rod tip up and wind it on up. lots a crappie and white bass there walleye and all sorts a diff fish.

Thanks for the tips I will try out some of my taller poles next time, I was using the catfish ugly sticks today, 7"0. I was using the three way setup as I do in areas like this, so when it snags the weight will break off. I got the 3 way back sometimes but I was hanging up with everycast while the line was drifting down to settle (started with 1oz weights and worked up to 3oz). I have fished areas similiar to there but nothing that bad with snags, within 30 seconds of the cast I was hung up and could feel the tension on the line. Alot of time the weight end and hook end where hanging up so I tried out some shorter line on the hook with better results. I will give it another shot but try further down the spillway next time. I was fishing up by the dam today on both sides. No real bites though today and it was a pain to constantly redo my rigs.....

I use 12' rods when bank fishing below the dam, some guys use up to 16' rods.. When I first started fishing there it was frustrating as you seen. Just needed the right gear. Great place to fish once I figured it out. Use a break away 3 way rig as mentioned. You need a reel capable of casting clear to the middle of the river to avoid the rip rap. If there running water you will need a 8 oz. weight or even larger to hold once it hits bottom. My guess is you didnt have enough weight to hold or werent casting clear to the middle. As soon as you feel it hit bottom lock the reel and leave it sit for a 1/2 hour or so before you reel in to re-bait or catch a fish. I use a 3-4 foot section of 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe for rod holders. Wedge the pvc in the rocks (really good) and it will also help to keep your rods up higher.

I use all baitcast reel setups and was getting the rigs out pretty far, out towards the middle area. But yeah the water was moving pretty good and even my 3oz weights were being drug down pretty quick. So it sounds like that was the issue on this trip was not enough weight. I use up to 10oz sinkers on the rivers but never expected to even use up to an 8oz or bigger in a spillway but that current was strong. That is why I was thinking of going further down next time so the current slows down some. I have a cast net but fear of getting it hung up in rocks, what bait of choice do you use there?

Yes sounds like just not enough weight Josh. They have been running about 30,000 cfs.
If the open all the spillways they can run as much as 64,000 cfs if I remember right. There wiil be rollers 10 feet high or so half way down bledsoe ferry lol.

Fresh Cut bait is what I use:

    For numbers, shad.
For big fish, big bluegill heads with some gut pocket still attached ... and carp fillets....
