went to coffeen sunday not a bad day bass fishing using red rattle traps small 6 pounder and a 5 pounder full of eggs and a bunch of little ones.talk to some folks there crappie not biting yet .channel cat are fair and there was a 80 pound flat head pulled about two weeks ago just wanted to let u all know thanks

80 lb flathead. Wow just shy of the state record. I would imagine there is a state record in there.

i heard the state record was broke last year of the year before on clinton lake by a guy crappie fishing. he had a video on youtube but took it off. maybe it was just a "line class record" im pretty sure it was close to 80 lbs. but not 100% sure

I've never had any problem catching channel cats in Coffeen. My problem there has always been to catch any of any sort of quality. Tons of little fiddler bait stealers. I took to moving as soon as I would catch any fiddlers and sometimes I could find something in the 2-3 pound range in a different spot. Several years back I used to do a little jugging and trotlining in there and that yielded a little better quality fish too. I know they catch some big flatheads in there. The only one I ever had on was probably around 30 pounds. He came on a jug and I lost him after messing with him for 15 minutes. Didn't have a net with me.

Same here, can always go there and catch 20-30 little cats.... but rarely anything over 2 lb.

found the post. i read it on here. he caught it on 6lb test crappie fishin. it weighed 78 lbs he showed it on the video. but he released it so it never got weighed officially. o well even if his scale was off a few pounds still a fish of a life time. the video has been removed buy there is replies to his post. not sure how to get the link on here. the thread was " 78lb flathead clinton lake illinois"
