Use 4/0 or 5/0 circles or J hooks with cut bait that's natural to where you're fishing on a basic slip rig and you should catch some. Remember to have your rod on free spool even if you dont have a clicker, you lose a lot less fish if they can run with the bait.

ya if your new to the sport try circles. but remember when a fish pulls line or the rod tip down lift the rod swiftly up till you feel him on. dont jerk it as you would to set a j hook. all you need to stick a circle is pressure. they dig themselves in. jerking will result in the hook being pulled out of its mouth.

    they have covered the liver.

try deep holes on the outside bends of rivers and structure. logs rock bars rock riffles.

    Default cut and circle

i use cut blue gills and green sunfish. cut them from dorsel to belly about one inch wide hookem through the dorsel and leave plenty of hook sticking out ( don't burry the hook in the bait) the fish don't care and i like 06 to 08 circle hooks they seem to work the best for me up here in Iowa but do some playing around and find out what works for you.
    best of luck
