In my opinion neither is completely better than the other they both have there pros and cons. With spinning reels you don't have to worry about back lashes, but they are bigger and take up more space on a boat. With baitcasters they are more compact and take up less space, but you have to deal with back lashes every now and then. There are allot more pros and cons for each I use both, and like both it just depends on the situation.

Taught myself to cast a conventional and never looked back as for as a go to catfish reel.. I got and use Abu's, Pfluger's, Penn's
and a Quantum Iron that I just can't part with..
This is my first year with a Penn, and I got to say "I LIKE" !! A 209 & learning about a sea scamp.. It's sweet, very smooth.. Looking forward to using it..
As I posted on another review, my joints don't work like they did. So I may one day go to spinning reels..
Wondering about a Penn spinning reel with some bearings.. Something smooth like a conventional reel.
O'Well time will tell.

If I was stuck with nothing but baitcasters for catfishing I quit catfishing.
