Painting an old Chrysler 9.9
Welp, I've decided to restore the 1986 Chrysler Force 9.9 I picked up this week. I began disassembly yesterday and snapped a couple pics along the way. I've also begun to paint some of the bits n pieces, and tonight I removed the engine off its block. There's not a lot of info about these old motors out there, so hopefully my pictures of disassembling and reassembling this motor may help someone out there. These are neat little motors, and this one in particular is a strong runner. If anyone lives in PA and is interested in buying it when I'm done, feel free to send me a PM. I love the look of a clean engine.. I can't wait to put it back together after everything has been cleaned and painted. The paint is specifically made for painting engines and can withstand high temperatures and exposure to gas/oil. Obviously white will not stay white with exhaust fumes around, but it took 20 years for the inside to get yellow and acquire chips, it's about due for a little clean-up

tomorrow I will clean the lower cowl and the powerhead and hopefully get around to taping them and painting. I don't plan on painting the whole outboard because the exterior looks pretty good.

This was a pleasant surprise, by the way. I was planing on cleaning up the points on the starter, but they looked to be in great shape.

I swear.. I'll stop posting threads on "bubbas outboards" for awhile! lol I'm sure youre all gettin sick of me by now. Here's my final update (I may post to this thread again in 2 weeks or so, when a couple parts come in and I get to wrap everything up) BUT here's what got done today... Powerhead was painted, along with the tiller arm and some linkages. I let everything dry and reassembled the outboard. While I had it apart I decided to replace all the fuel hoses and used 'gasket maker' to try to help strengthen the seals (it's real hard to get gaskets for this particular force motor). During my rebuild I came across two problems.
1. I couldn't wind the new starter cord. This model does NOT wrap its starter cord around the flywheel. It uses a separate spool that sits next to the carburetor, and its held together by a plastic piece on the bottom which appears to be broken. I can't say for sure until I get a good look at a parts diagram. For now, I decided to leave it off since I can 'emergancy start' it just fine..
2. This isn't really an issue; but when I got the motor a plastic piece which holds the tiller in place was broken, I just placed an order for it and now I'm waiting for it to come in. Also, the lower unit that is currently on this outboard was getting water in it so I'm waiting on a seal kit.
And FYI, after painting your not supposed to use the motor for a couple days to let all the paint harden. I couldn't help myself, and I started her up real quick to make sure everything was dandy. It wasn't.. I quickly realized I forgot to screw the starter plate in.. quick fixed that, and wall-ah! Started right up. Then I shut it off quick and now I'm just waiting for my parts to come in!
ALL in all, was it worth my time? I say yes, only because as a new owner of 2 of these force 9.9's, and not having an owners manual, the disassembly/reassembly taught me a lot about the way things are linked up and what belongs where. Also I managed to pull about 7 dead stink bugs out of the engine, as well as fill a trash can with black rags getting all the grease off of it. I think I heard one time too that having a whole bunch of gunk building up on your engine can encourage overheating... Either way.. It's just nice to have a clean motor.
