another rod i was thinking about was a shimano crucial 7'11 medium heavy extra fast action. line wt. 15-30lb. Would this rod be a little too stiff as well?

Here is vote #2 for the Ugly Stick Striper rod. It works fine on channels. Caught Flatheads up to 30 pounds on it too. It is not a Flathead rod, but just about perfect for the average channel cat guy unless you are fishing the Red River.

One other thing...The TWC Whisker Whips are very nice rods. Just picked one up and haven't used it yet, but I can already tell it's going to end up as my go to catfish rod. If you want to spend a little more money than the Ugly Stik and still not break the bank, this rod would be hard to beat.

i already have three ugly stick catfish rods and one ugly stick striper rod. these are rods i will use if i'm using rod holders with multiple poles out. but i'm wanting something light and sensitive to use when i'm using only one pole.

21 bucks and change will get you a 6foot 6" rhino indestructible medium action at wallmart, just as good as a uglystick and ten bucks cheaper, caught my pb 21.7 lb channel.

Garret, we all have different preferences and different ways we fish. I myself don't care for graphite rods for catfishing, but mine are almost always in a rod holder with circle hooks too. I totally understand your situation. If I were holding the rod, I would want the same thing. Do you have anyplace close by where you can go pick up a bunch of rods? Bps or cabelas? That would be your best bet. Picking rods for me is a tough thing to do. I have only ordered one rod that I didn't touch first, and I sent it back. I'm sure the perfect rod for what you are doing is out there, you just have to find it. Musky rods tend to be heavier than most due to the size of the baits we throw on them. A good flipping stick still sounds like it is what you are looking for. I'm not aware of any 8'6" flipping sticks, but I'm sure if you drop down to 7'6", you will find what you're looking for. I haven't touched that Crucial, so I can't comment on the action. The specs on any rod only tell part of the story as they all rate them differently.

just got back from looking at some rods. i think i'm more unsure of what i want now than before i got there haha. those bass rods seem like they would break so easy as stiff as most of them are. thats what i'm looking for as far as sensitivity goes though. i guess they are more durable than what i probably think. there were a few rods i liked but didn't love so i decided to hold off for now. from the feel of the st croix rods i held i think a mh fast action rod will be good for me. i actually found a 8' st croix avid inshore rod thats mh fast action that i really like. i seen it online so i haven't got to hold it but i held a 7' regular avid mh fast action at gander mountain and i really liked it except the height. i don't believe there is any difference in the inshore and regular except they did things to make it resistant to salt water so i think thats the rod i'm going to go with. Have you by chance ever held this rod? i know i'm making this alot more complicated than it has to be, but i want to be happy with my purchase. i appreciate all the help

Garret, odds are those two rods are nothing alike. At least not as close as you're thinking. The saltwater rods have different actions because they use them differently. I can't remember for sure, but that may have been the same rod I sent back. It's probably got a more moderate action than the freshwater rods you touched so it MIGHT be what you're looking for. Don't worry about breaking one of those rods on a fish. The only way you'll break one is if you don't take care of it and nick it up. As long as it has the backbone and the right bend to it, you should be fine. Besides, isn't the warranty part of the reason you want it??? ;)

haha. it sure is. i guess i'm just use to my ugly stick that feel like noodles compared to the rods i felt yesterday. anyways if those rods have a more moderate action it will be perfect. i'm going to go ahead and order one see how i like it. i appreciate all the help. and i'm sure you'll see plenty of more questions from me on here haha
